Depends on what mods you have.
-
Do you really want to bring up that thread again. Start with what is easy and cheap to test. If those don't work then tear it down further. Do one thing at a time and test after each thing done.
-
Put a fuel filter on and pull the pilot jet on the side thats backfiring and make sure it's not plugged with a piece of sand. Then adjust the air screws on both carbs so they are the same.
-
Are your spark plugs loose after you tighten them (can you wiggle them a little)? If you can't then your probably detonating and that is causing your plugs to back out. Try higher octane gas and see if it still happens (NO OCTANE BOOST!!!! get some race gas!) How tight are you tight are you tightening those plugs?

Banshee's are the easiest motors to work on in my opinion... well besides an air cooled single. What do you want to do to it? Doing a topend is pretty simple... just take your time and make sure you put all bolts and nuts into labeled ziplock bags. Get a manual to help guide your way.... pretty simple if you have the right tools for the job.

If you have a filter flange from Noss then don't worry about the stock filter and cage. You might need to cut the plastic tabs inside the airbox that holds the stock filter as well. What kind of mods do you have (pipes, open airbox-no lid) anything besides the filter?
-
Because you did a new clutch pack you will need to adjust the nut in the center of the clutch pressure plate. You might have put the clutch cable in the holder wrong as well... if you look on the top case make sure it's setup right.

Got1 make sure you tighten that countershaft sprocket nut lol. Jim why did you use a spacer plate? Did you not use racers choice pistons on this build? Were the cylinders ported previously?

I guess it sucks to be you guys since you live out of state. Number one you can't have anything shipped second day air on a weekend. GBF I was there in the parts department when you talked to someone on the phone about your order. He told you that they couldn't get it shipped out until monday... yeah something happened between then and the day that it shipped (who knows what). If you want to talk to anyone about this email [email protected] he is the owner of Alba and he'll probably make it up to you if you don't go off and give him a chance. If you really still want a flywheel puller I'll pick one up in person from there and send it to you if you want to send me a check/money order. I'll over night it if you want to pay for it. I don't care what shop it is... if you want something by a certain date your best off going to a shop in person and paying for it on the spot. GBF who was it that helped you?

Blue your chain looks like it needs adjusting...

Take and swap the spark plug wires... put the right one on the left and the left on the right. If this causes the misfire to happen on the other side a plug wire is bad. 75% of the time it's a plugged up pilot jet... I don't care how much you try to force air through or carb cleaner it doesn't matter. You need to stick a very fine piece of wire through the pilot jet to get what ever is plugging it up out. If this doesn't help you should look at adjusting the air screws on both carbs so they are out the same amount.

Call up Alba... they had 2 sets hanging from a peg last week. Ask for Mike Stralo and tell him Paul from Sabre Springs sent you.

Take a GPS with you and make sure any crew you have has one as well. I burned up a complete stock tank of gas in 13 miles while riding in the dunes. This was with 370 mains on stock carbs. I was not wide open all the time either, mainly just half throttle 2-4th gear until I was pretty much empty. If you hit reserve you only have about 2 miles left. Get at least 20 inch rear tires and run a 15 tooth front sprocket. Check your gas tank when your half way out and see how much gas you have used... if you have plenty twist that throttle more... less than half and you better conserve. Make sure you cell phone works!

Are you sure the rings are the same thickness? Maybe one groove is slightly widers and a ring is thicker.
-
If you have to remove this nut use a wire coat hanger between the clutch basket gear and the crank PTO gear. I think the nut is a 22mm but am not totally sure... it's been a few weeks since I pulled a motor.

With the compression you listed with advanced timing (+4) you should be running about 100 octane gas just to be safe. Some people run into problems running a stock head with +4 timing on pump gas. All motors are slightly different so you might not need to but it's better safe than rebuilding a motor!
-
How much kicking compression do you have Prerunner? What kind of oil do you use also? Was the tank of gas that you had in the bike old? Have you tried a leak down test to make sure you didn't have any air leaks? These are the reasons I think you melted down... the timing advanced only compounded these problems.
-
Alba doesn't sell +4 keys... only +3. If you paid 20 bucks you paid too much as well. How did you install the key? Did you use a torque wrench? I bet the reason you smoked your topend was from detonation cause by too high of compression and not high enough octane gas.
-
The one advantage that the hot rods crank has over a stock crank is the centers are rebuildable. Other than that there isn't much of a difference. Since you have an older J-arm machine 87-90 you might want to look at getting a new crank that is trued and welded.
-
If you ride in a group and you notice someone is missing you should stop and back track to find the missing person. Knowing land marks really helps you find your way even on a dark night. There are always lights or something that you can see to find your direction when lost in the dunes. GPS can be a life saver and I do have it on my Banshee... it was worth every penny of the 100 dollar price tag.

Change the pilots to 30's, then make sure the air screws are turned out the same amount on both carbs. Make sure the carb idle screws are turned the same amount. Check the choke tube between carbs. Check for an air leak around the reed cage on the side that doesn't run well.

You can go buy the clutch hub holding tool or if you are getting a new clutch you can simply bolt one friction plate and one steel plate together. I like having the wrench since it's really two tools in one. One side holds the clutch hub and the pins on the back are used to hold the flywheel so you can remove the nut off the shaft. I've also used the pins to hold a sprocket when tightening the sprocket nut.

Don't overlook the lever and perch. As the perch and lever pivit point wear they tend to bind making the pull much harder. I'd put a new cable and lever/perch on first before messing with the clutch.
-
This has been done before on 250R's. The main problem with them is the reeds block the holes. Your better off doing boyesen ports and making sure you have everything working together.

Ok I'll try to explain what's going on as there seems to be a little confusion. The dome that was cut wrong had too much taken off the bottom surface where it seals with the cylinder. The anti-rotation tab cut out (pic 2) has the extra .020 of material. The first step in the dome does not have this extra material so the dome only had the little tab holding the dome against the cylinder instead of the first step of the dome. The dome ended up wearing the base plate a little (pic 3) letting the dome move up with each compression stroke. In the last pic you can see the dome sits into the head base plate and is not flush (you can see the red clearly off to the right side where the stud hole is). Before anyone goes and questions Noss heads let me tell you this... the head that Justin got is top notch. I have seen many different types of heads and right now I'd have to say the Noss head is one of the best I've seen. The problem Justin had was caused by a dome that was cut a little too much (an honest mistake that could happen to anyone). David is taken care of the problem without question and stands behind his products. I do not have a Noss head myself but I am thinking about getting one for my new motor. I'm not paid by Noss (I wish I was), I don't have any affiliation with David or his company, I'm just a fanatic of Banshee's and parts that are associated with them. David do you have custom cut domes for a 7mm stroker crank Banshee running stock cylinders? I'm building this motor in the next few weeks and have to find a source for a head. If you can let me know how much I'll probably be in touch.
