  1. sorry i haven't replied i have been working around the house. tommarow i'm going to get some race gas. so should i drain what i currently have in there or just run the tank out taking it easy? btw i do know from experiance with the yfz that the gas around here sucks, stuck floats every two weeks. the gas i get up north was never a problem. i am going to jet it to what u recommended tommarow as well, and get a hold of some solder and check my squish what should it about be? .040?
  2. allright i did a little riding from the weekend till today, about an hour and a half on the trail tech. just to be safe i put the stock cdi back in to get the timing back to normal, and i put a bunch of octane booster in the tank. took it easy, kept it half throttle and down, constantly moving the throttle as well. so this afternoon i did a compression test and after it was warmed up it read 150 psi for each cylinder. is this ok for pump gas? or should i have more time on the engine before i can get an accurate reading. also i'm a little fuzzy on how to check the squish. is there a paticular solder u need, and can i shove it in the spark plug hole? TIA
  3. i have 21cc domes that should be good for pump gas? and i don't have a timing plate all i have is the dyna with the harness removed, so it will have a stock curve. like wes said though it has 2-3 advance even on the stock curve. i want to be running pump gas cause in upstate ny the gas stops don't have anything over 93 octane
  4. thanx a bunch for the info, i rod it today (breaking it in) and so far so good. i don't have a 4 mil so i'm going to get a hold of some cel needles, finish breaking her and start tunning. again thanx wesw for the advice
  5. ok i have around 140 psi with 21cc domes. i haven't even fooled with the ignition yet, so its on stock curve. when i 1st had the porting done i started out with stock carbs and jim gave me jetting recommendations that where the pilot was way rich and the main to small i think it was a 350 main. i broke it in just how he said and started to get on it a little more and didn't run well so i wanted to do a plug check. so i'm in 6th about ready to kill it when it lost power and i killed it right away. come to a stop and i see both spark plugs are loose, i take them out and both of the straps are half way melted off. i knew right away the pistons were done, the rings were welded to the piston. both plugs were the same so it wasn't an air leak. i called jim told him what happened, and couldn't see how 350 main was too lean on stock carbs. so i ordered a new set of pistons and fresh set of copper washer for the noss head. i get the box in the mail with washers and one piston. it wasn't charged on the bill so i got the other piston at the local stealer. now i'm back fresh motor all broken in i went right up to a 380 or 370 main on stock carbs dropped one size on the pilot, and had it pretty good with my plug checks. but i still had that problem with 5th to 6th no matter how i winded it out or what the jetting was i couldn't cure it. i figured i was at the limit of what the stock carbs could do for me. so i purchased a boss intake and 33pwks from jim. his jetting recommendations were 160 main, 55 pilot, needle middle clip. the carb came with a 165 main i think, and i told jim it was about 20-30 here where i'm riding and he said 160 main should be plenty big enough. i ran the 160 for a little bit and it didn't run well so i upped it to a 162. went out on the lake and it ran good. that week i posted my specs up on this site (back in feburary) and banchetta said i should be running a 170 main. it was too late cause my compression was fubar'd. the ring lands were screwed up on one piston so i replaced both to be safe. this past week i put her all back together and i'm in the process of breaking it in, i figure now that its warmer a 165 should be ok to start. i'm not trying to bash jim, i'm just wondering if i have the wrong port and don't know it. and yes the 33pwks did help out a lot but i still am not happy with the initial 6th gear lag, hell with this set up it shouldn't be a problem with stock gearing right? sorry for the long post i just wanted to try to explain my 2 year situtation the best i could
  6. thanx for the replies, i'm going to get some needles and do some testing. i'm really worried about the main being close because this now my 3rd set of pistons i've done, due to bad jetting recommmendations from jim.
  7. i need some input on settings for my banshee. i have, passion hot mx 12 port noss cool head with pump gas domes t-5s v-force reeds dyna ignition 33pwks pro-flo with k&n and no lid i know my main is at 165, my pilot a 48, and my needle is at the third clip. i'm not sure what the needle is, its what ever comes with the carb. my problem is the transition from 5th to 6th i have a lag at the begining and then it picks up, not a bad lag more like a lose in momentum. i was thinking i need to change my needle?
  8. ok thanx i'm going for some test and tune at the local lake tomarrow
  9. ok i'll play with it tonight, i have a ported (by passion), t-5s, airbox lid off, 33pwks, jim told me 160 main, needle on 4th clip, and 55 pilots i believe, and so far the plugs are kinda black looking.
  10. during high gear loads, if i hold it wide open it pulls however when i back the throttle down to 3/4 it accelerates better. i went for a couple of runs up and down the road, and everytime the banshee pulled harder at 3/4 and if i pushed it to WOT I would lose the pull. is there such a thing as the carbs being to far open? and with 33pwks and a terry cable be harder to push than stockers? TIA
  11. highroller: how is the box held in?..... i'm in the process of doing mine
  12. my air box lid is removed, and i fried my rings with 350 mains during my last plug test. i havn't had a chance to toy with it due to weather. if i had an air leak why would both cylinders be exactly the same? is it possible i have a drag port instead of a mx?
  13. i cut the threads off 3 different times, and i did warm it up on the old plugs. i know i'm rich, so maybe i'll throw the 380s in and try again. can i do a rev out in 5th gear?
  14. i did a plug chop the other day on my banshee for the 1st time. i followed the instructions from the tech docs, and i'm not getting a reading. i'm trying to dial my bike in better, it runs great except the transition from 5th to 6th gear it will hesitate then slowly pick up. so whats going on here? when i first melted my motor i had 350 mains, since i rebuilt it i have run 380-400 with no change and still no reading on a plug chop. my mods: passion hot mx porting t5s noss head v-force reeds stock carbs (400 mains, 30 pilot, toomey needle 2nd clip, airscrews 1.5 turns) pro-flo k&n with airbox lid removed dyna ignition stock setting altitude 1000ft and air temps 50-60 stock gearing
  15. sredish thanx for the info i feel more comfortable about my settings now. dajogejr i tried 350 mains on my "last" top end, it didn't work out too well. it appeared to be running good until i melted the rings. i may be a little rich on the mains, but i'd rather be safe. i guess its true what some of you guys go on about all bikes aren't created equal, and require different settings. even in the same altitudes and temps. i do have one more question will the 33pwks help my bottom end or hurt it? TIA
