  1. I'd start w/ 300 mains and go from there. Run it wot in 6th gear for 5-10 seconds, shut it down, pull the plugs. Black is rich, brown is perfect, tan or white is lean....next raise the needles one notch (by lowering the clip 4 slots from the top of the needle) you should feel your power coming on at a lower rpm. If the shee likes it, then try the 5th slot from the top. It'll either like it or hate it... you'll see performance differences.... The stock pilot should be fine, adjust the air screws to throttle response.... Don't bother w/ the boost bottle. Waste of money....if anything, get reeds, cool head, and +4 timing...best bang for the buck...oh ya, put a 15 tooth front sprocket on...
  2. I love those pipes for trail, sand pits, and even mx... They pull hard down low if jetted right...Have you tried raising the needles?? You'll see great bottom end gains...
  3. You don't need a 420 or nos to beat a 250R or YFZ. Get some midrange pipes. 99nhbanshee has a 420LR and has DMC exhaust. His shee hauls ass, but he just spun a lower bearing on the crank. You might want to get better bearings and weld the crank.... Personally, I'd get midrange pipes, cool head, to start. That'll wake it right up and makes a HUGE gain from stock. Try that and go from there....
  4. Depends on the air box mods.. ARe you cutting the end of the lid?? Removing the lid?? Running a K&N or other aftermarket filtersj??
  5. Need more info then that... how does it run at wot?? how does it idle?? Do you feel like your constantly revving it to clean it out?? Does it sputter until you hold it wot?? Does it hesitate?? Start first kick when cold?? start first kick when warm??
  6. Wow, this isn't easy. Ok nastybuddy is on it..Yes you do already have "jets" in the carbs, they are set up for the stock exhaust and intake. When you change the air flow to the motor, you have to increase the amount of fuel also, by changing the "jets". If your have more air and not enough fuel "lean" then you can make the motor run hot and melt a piston. YOu 'll also have a performance lost. If you run too much fuel to the amount of air, "rich" then it'll bog or sputter and not hardly run at all. So yes, jetting is very important and makes HUGE gains in performance. There are 3 ways to adjust the carbs, Pilot jets, needle height, and Main jets. Each control different throttle openings and work together. Jetting a carb is an art. Learning takes experience and good feel....Read a lot and learn.....BTW, sea level means that your at the same height as the ocean......As you get higher above the ocean "like mountains" the thinner the air gets, so you don't require as much fuel. So elevation or height above sea level affects jetting. Hope that helps....
  7. Not sure, I think it'll help out a lot. Look at the taxes the state will take in. Plus 10,000 jobs isn't much for New York City, but thats a lot for Sanford area. They will have to bus people in and I'll bet a lot of people will be traveling 30-45 minutes to work there. I think the starting pay is like 15/hour...It'll definately help bring the minimum wage up... McDonalds and BK better be ready to pay!!! Small businesses aren't too crazy because of the wage increase, but I think it'll help the state and sanford quite a bit. They already plan on redoing roads and I bet the landscape will drastically change for the better. Sanford needs it...I can't see the negatives besides the wage increases which benefit the laborers in Maine.....look at how well the small businesses will do though from all the extra people working in our state. Restaraunts will do better, along w/ small sandwich stores. Construction will probably increase due to traveling. Price of land will go up, etc.....and best of all, I'll be able to have a slot machine in my living room. Look how much money I'll make!!!!
  8. I agree w/ Duece. do you still have the stock clutch??
  9. Lefty, you can weigh it w/ you on the scale holding it, then weigh yourself w/o it. Then you'll know how much the swingarm weighs....No need of a lightweight scale.
  10. Doesn't matter what everyone else runs. It only matters what YOUR shee likes..If your plugs say your lean, then richen it up. If your throttle response is numb then try a 27.5 pilot and readjust the air screws. You might want to try raising the needles one slot and see how YOUR shee likes it. It'll either like it or hate it. You should notice your shee pulling harder at lower rpms....Good luck and let us know how you make out. Remember, you are running high rev pipes and will never get rid of all the hesitation, but jetting usually will take out some of it...
  11. I'll have to say, that they did have some decent low end. More than the T5's I've ridden. Granted he is pushing over 200lbs of compression!!!! I was still surprised that w/ cut T3's and drag port it still pulled pretty good. Very slight hesitation and hold on!! Less hesitation then T5's and pc pipes by far....I was more surprised about how snappy it was when your on the pipe. Maybe I should build my compression and put some race fuel in mine.......
  12. It let go!!!!! Damn that sucks, thats the fastest quad I've seen around here so far. Definately impressive. It went really good and was spinning like it was on ice. I couldn't imagine if it actually hooked up!!!! Let us know what went when you pull it apart.....Even if its not runnin, if we all hook up in a few weeks, just come up!!! We'll have plenty of antifreeze w/ your name on it and your not driving this time so theres no excuses..
  13. That was my first thought also. Check your compression. Low compression will cause hard starting when cold and no bottom end power.....
  14. Clean the carbs thoroughly and check the wires going on the coil (orange and black)make sure you have a nice connection. Also is the tors still on?? Little black box above the left exhaust?? Maybe try disconnecting the black/white striped wire coming from the on/off switch on the handlebars, there is a connection towards the gas tank. Disconnect it and that'll disconnect the ground that the on/off switch uses to kill the motor. I've seen those switches go after about 5 or so years....
  15. Cut the end of the air box lid off (1.5") so you still have all four clips to hold the cover down. Drilling holes is useless, there is still too much restriction. If you can run w/o the cover then even better. Needles depends on the pipes. I like the stock needles, but different pipes like other needles so try both... I'd start w/ a 300 main, stock pilot or 27.5, needle at the 3rd clip....Stock mains are 200-220 depending on year and area.
  16. I do the same type of riding and perfer the midrange pipes hands down. Your call though....
  17. Jet kits are a waste of money. Buy individual jets...Cheaper...Post this in the jetting forum.
  18. I got a 4hp gain by cutting the end of my cover (1.5") so you still have all four clips. Then I gained another 1hp taking the cover completely off. Thats w/ midrange pipes, so I'd think high revs would benefit more.
  19. Chase73 was running 35 pilots in his. Same problem. Try it out, what do you have to lose?? He lives in MA. I agree w/ Boony though. Better to be safe then sorry. Make sure you have NO air leaks. Something doesn't sound right. Your air screws should make noticeable changes, especially on Keihin carbs...
  20. I agree, get a cool head and boost your compression, that'll help w/ the low end power your craving. If thats still not enough, then get a different set of pipes. You'll lose the high rev, but gain a lot of low end and midrange. You'll have more torque and be able to pull a higher gear to make up the top speed....Depends on your type of riding also. Whats the terrain you mostly ride on??
  21. Your asking what everyone has been trying to get and it won't happen. You can't have insane low end and top end unless you get powervalve cylinders for 4k. You have to sacrifice top end power for low end power and vise versa. BTW, don't get confused w/ top speed and top end power. For your type of riding, you'll hardly ever use the peak rpms. You'll spend most your time getting to peak, so get a pipe that'll help pull out of the hole. STick w/ a midrange pipe and who cares what it sounds like....They all sound good. What would you rather have, a good powercurve or cool sound??
  22. Did you check your plugs after running wot in 6th gear??? Running lean will usually make it run hotter.....
  23. 99nhbanshee was there also. He brought the YZ450 out and let me try it....Its a little different from the shee, but the more you ride it, the more you like it...Great power and even better suspension. I was dragracing w/ it against about 10 other bikes. Took everything down there.... Including my friend on a sst piped shee, w/ a cool head and vito's ss pistons, and a -2 swingarm.... He would catch up after I hit 5th gear, but I'd take him out of the hole for about 2-3 bike lengths... So I give the new member of the Yamaha family a good thumbs Up!!!! Thanks for letting me try it.. Jimmy, let me know when your coming up, I've gotta check out you latest before sledding season starts....BTW, who got that pic of my down hill jump over (I think it was you)? Was that John that took that pic?? I'd like to see it and get a copy..My clutch is starting to slip bad now, I have to get a new one. I guess the Duncan clutch only last 3 years...... I'm thinking about a Hinson or EBC clutch. I want one that'll pull easy...My DR was nice, but I like to experiment... Walter, the other drink was Danny's downhome punch....Simple combo, just Fruit punch and Absolute Vodka 151 proof. We also used Clear spring 190 proof instead of vodka.....thats the stuff that'll turn your carpets white!!! Good thing it was a company phone. Fringe benefits!!!! We should all get a final day and all show up. Maybe come up the night before and we'll have a big BBQ at my house or something.
  24. You HAVE to adjust the mains to the plug color only. You have to run the shee at wot in 6th gear for 5-10 seconds, pull the clutch in, shut it down, coast to a stop, pull the plugs. Normal riding will give false readings. Try a 270 and go from there. Plugs should be brown color. Tan or white is lean and black is rich.....Once you get the mains dialed in then try adjusting the needles. I'd try raising them one notch and see how your shee likes it. You should notice it pulling harder at lower rpms....
