  1. Take the air box lid off or cut the end of the lid. Cut the last 1.5" off the end of the lid right behind the clips so you still have all four clips. That should help out a lot. Also adjust the air screws. You might have to go on the mains when you mod the lid.
  2. I sent my '89 motor out to Pt racing and had them go through it for inspection. I was going to build a 403 stroker until they called me one day and said I was looking at $3000 before the stroker kit!!!!! Said I need a whole new clutch basket and clutch, new 6th gear, new cases (upper and lower), new stator, crank, etc.....They sent the motor back to me at no charge for the inspection. Just shipping. I thought that was pretty cool. They sent it back totally disassembled though...I mean completely disassembled...
  3. I know a lot of sponsored people that can ride, but don't know shit about performance..
  4. I agree but the closest place to go testing is about a 2 hour drive away so i wanted to make sure its fairly accurate before I go out. I don't think the cops would like it if I was pinning 6th down my 25MPH street. Heh, thanks again. 2 hours!!! damn...Bring the jets w/ you and find a testing area. Spend a day and jet it in. You only have to do it once, then you can enjoy the performance every ride after....
  5. Trails and duning are like apples and oranges. You won't find a pipe that'll be best for both terrains. The Pt mids pull hard from bottom to top and have awesome throttle response. The powerband comes on really smooth and doesn't create much tire spin. The PC pipes have a light switch powerband which I don't care for, but they rev a little higher. I consider them to be more of a top end pipe. Would be great for desert, but I wouldn't choose it for trails. Some love them for ported motors...helps to get that low end lack... Fatties are a great pipe. More top-mid pipe, but kinda of inbetween the pc pipes and PT mids... great pipes, good throttle response and low end. I love the sst's the best from the fmf family...I haven't riden DMC's yet.. Bills pipes are a great all around pipe. They have a good throttle response, low end and decent top end power as well. I'll post my personal reference from low-mid to top-mid. PT mids ....mid Fmf sst's ....mid Bills ..........mid Fmf fatties ..mid-top Dmc??? Toomey......top end Pc..............top end
  6. High octane fuel doesn't give you any hp, just stops detonation on high compression motors...
  7. I would think he'd know what he's talking about, but if you doubt him, then do a plug check and adjust the air screws and try different needle positions... Trial and error, thats how you find what YOUR shee likes...
  8. Ben is on it... also how does it run if you just turn the air screws all the way in and then out equally?? Try turning them 2 turns from fully seated...does it run evenly?? It is odd that one is out further. Never seen that...Take the air screw out and blow compressed air in there or maybe even probe it, maybe there is a grain of sand in there or something.....the pilots sound a little rich...check them out..I'd drop them down a size. I like my air screws to be optimum around 1 turn out for best throttle response. Being 2 turns out, tells me that your pilot could very well be too rich.
  9. I'd go up 2 sizes and do a plug check after a wot run in 6th gear for 5-10 seconds...Running rich won't hurt the motor, but running lean will..
  10. Run it wot in 6th gear for 5-10 seconds and pull the plugs. See what they look like. If you were rich before then you might be perfect now.....Do a plug check...
  11. I was gonna address that also, but he said he had 20" dominators, not sand tires......I agree w/ the sand tires though, they do rob hp and have more drag. Depending on how many paddles and how much ponies you have will alter the gearing a lot. For dirt, grass, sand, and mud w/ knobby tires, defanitely get a 15 tooth..
  12. YOu might be on to something there. Anything is possible...WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL US!!!!!!! At least you have something, was there any oil around the cylinder?? I'm sure you will, but I'll say it anyway. Just take your time and check EVERYTHING while its apart...The nut could have been the problem, but could also be coincidental, so I'd give it a 100 point inspection when it goes together...keep us updated.. and good luck!!
  13. All bad....you don't gain anything w/ a 13 unless you want to do extremely tight trails. The 13 will give you even more tire spin = less traction. You'll spend more time shifting then anything else..The shee has plenty of torque, let it pull.
  14. Damn,,,, I'd say the problem lies in the stator....Can't have a loose stator..the smell would tell me something definately isn't right there. The basket will have play. As for the jetting, I think you have an air leak somewhere....You should have a black plug on normal riding. It should only be brown when your wot..
  15. Have you done any porting w/ the PT mids?? If so, then can you get even more low end as well as top??
  16. Are you planning on cutting the air box lid or leaving it whole??
  17. To adjust the air screws, just turn them all the way in (seated) then turn them out =. I have mine 1 turn out from seated.....To sync the idle screws: make sure whoever installed the tors removal kit had filed the side of the carb enough. You have to take off about 1/16-1/8" off the side of the carb. If not, then the idle screw won't go in far enough....Once thats done, look into the intake and turn the idle screw in slowly until the slide moves very little, now do this to the other side. Start it up and adjust the idle = to both sides...
  18. There is one thing that those dynoes don't tell you and thats the torque.....A trail rider would rather have more torque than hp. A desert rider would rather have more hp than torque.....After looking at those dynoes, I wouldn't bother choosing from that.....Those charts are all very close, but I can tell you that those pipes don't act the same at all....Notice a HUGE difference in pipes. Some pull harder down at the lower rpms and others pull harder on top. Thats where the torque comes to play....
  19. You have no sig!!!! BTW, how are those arms treating you?? Did you ever figure out why they were hitting???
  20. You can get the toomey 2 into 1 intake....removes the stock air box...
  21. I've owned over 5 different pipes and rode shees w/ just about every pipe out there. The PT mids are the best pipes that I've owned for all around pipe. Insane low end, and awesome pull straight to the top... I strongely recommend them over any other pipe for trail and sand pits...I only have polished cylinders and no porting...I'm pushing 53hp across a 2000rpm band and 24-36ft/lbs or torque across a 5000rpm band....
  22. Depends on your riding style and terrain. What type of riding do you do?? There is a ton of info on this subject, do a search...
  23. Nice job Ben, couldn't have said it any better. I'd rebuild it asap. Its called preventative maintenance.....Cost a little now or a lot later...
  24. Right on !!!!! Nothing like getting it to Go!!
  25. hmm......booties ......soft skin .......tasty fur bergers .............oh ya, you need to connect those wires...check the one going from the handlebars to just in case.....you need a ground to kill the motor. You don't have one.....
