PLZ help !! shee not runnin right
Banchetta replied to sheebroke's topic in Banshee Repairs and Mods
I haven't read anywheres in this topic saying that you tried new plugs........... -
I've been busy, but I'll try to make it on Saturday, so Sunday I'll hit Dayton. My friend Norman races there every weekend. I'm sure you met him. He has the 250R trike. Claims he runs 4.7's.
-
I'm not registered either. Warden shows up, then follow me. I've never seen them in the pits anyways. Sometimes on the sides of the roads where the pit entrance is, but we can avoid that. Let me know when your coming, I'll hook you up...
-
Run it wot for 5-10 seconds in 6th gear, pull the clutch in, shut it down, coast to a stop, pull the plugs. Black is rich, brown is perfect, tan or white is lean. Thats the best way.... Dial it in to YOUR shee.
-
Ok here we go. First, of all, the high rev pipes are great for open riding like desert and high speed riding where your always at peak rpms. Your style riding would be better w/ a set of midrange pipes. I run PT mids and love them. I've also like the Fmf sst's and Bills pipes for all around low end and top end power. A shorter swingarm is a must if your running knobby tires. Take 2" out. Excellent mod, not only for traction, but makes dramatic changes in handling as well since the rider is more over the wheels. One of my best mods... Keep the reed spacers out. I lost 2hp on the dyno w/ them across the curve. They make it hard to get the carbs out to. Remove the air box lid or cut the end of the lid off right behind the clips so you still have all 4 clips. Cut the last 1.5" off. Makes a huge difference. The vents won't do nothing especially being in the top of the lid. Next, gear it up to a 15 tooth front sprocket. You might even be able to pull higher depending how well tuned it is and what pipes you run. The +4 timing is a great choice. Shaving .030 off the head is a lot and I don't suggest it. I know other peeps haven't had problems, but one of my friends did. He shaved .025 off his head and put holes in the pistons even w/ 93 octane. Rebuilt it and did it again. After 3 sets of pistons, he went back to a stock head and problem solved. I run a head mod and love it. Never had a problem. Shaving the head is a cheap upgrade, but can be very expensive if it doesn't work.... Reed petals are great and will work just as good w/ your ported cages as anything else. Save your money on the cages. Get the crank welded and trued. Cost 75 bucks or do it your self. You might need a better clutch. The stocker won't handle 50hp. Find a clutch setup that pulls easy. I like the Duncan clutch for this reason. The is a clutch lock up assembly on the market now for the shee. They use it on street bikes forever and works well. Look into that while it apart. I'm guessing you'll be in the 50's for hp, which is respectable. I'm pushing 53hp across 2000rpms. My shee doesn't peak at just one point of rpm. It has a flat dome shape and a wide powerband of about 3800rpms. It pulls hard at the bottom and doesn't stop. Thats why I suggest the midrange pipes. Thats for motor mods, but power is useless w/o the chassis mods. Move your foot pegs back 2". Some guys use blaster foot pegs which move back 2" and lower 1". I just cut and rewelded mine. Cut and reweld your shifter and brake lever 2" shorter also. Shifting will be easier at the touch believe or not. I redrilled another hole where the brake lever connects to the piston (whatchamacallit), so the leverage = out. Another good mod is the shift star. It makes shifting a little easier. 2+2 or 2+1 arms are great improves stability. A must on a track. Get front shocks to go w/ them. Major improvement even on 4" bumps.... Tires, you want a round tall front tires. Don't get a flat front tire. They bite too hard on roots in the trails and rip the steering out of your hands. They also make the shee dart hard to one side when hitting ruts or hills. I like the tallness due to easier rolling over objects and bumps along w/ less resistance and rotation on the bearings. For rear tires, get a knobby like the Razor, shredder, holeshots, fast trekkers, turf tamers, etc. Most mx guys run the 18" turf tamers on the track, most common in my area is the 20" razors for sand pits and trails. I just bought the shredders and like them just as much as the razor. Tallness of the rear tire depends on riding terrain. Some go w/ the 22" for rocky trails and better ground cleareance. Mx guys use the 18" for less sidewall and more ability to slide. Thats what I got right now, and I'm sure I'll come up w/ more.

Tors is known as a couple of things. Did you disconnect the little black box above the left exhaust w/ the 3-wire plug??? What about the parking brake switch....?? -
I was surprised he was jumping downhill a couple of weeks ago. Granted it wasn't far, but it still impressed me. He doesn't even like to climb the easy hills never mind jump down them.....He's a riot though. You can shit on him and he feeds it right back. 8) Gotta love him...So you coming up again this year or what?? If not, then we are definately hooking up to go sledding. I've already been online looking at the aftermarket goodies.....oops....Was I thinking out loud again......

I was thinking about selling mine. Im making a custom mx frame for my own preference. My current mods are 2+2 arms, Works shocks (front) foot pegs cut and rewelded 2.5" back. -2" fireball swingarm w/ round housing carrier, x-33 axle, new chromoly antivibration steering stem, 2 weeks old, new handlebars, armidillo front bumper, and its all on a '00 frame. I also have a '89 frame that was powdercoated about 3 years ago. Its in mint shape and lost interest. It was gonna be my drag shee. I don't have much left for that one exept the radiator. I've been stripping and stealing parts off it.
-
I forgot to tell you guys, that there is a mx track about 3 miles from the sand pits. Only members can ride there. It cost $200/year and there will be snox riding for sleds this winter to. The track is pretty big and has some intense jumps and obstacles. There is a 90' double and some respectable table tops. I'll be joining, if anyone else is interested, let me know.

I have the Duncan racing clutch. Going on 3 years now. PUlls as easy as stock. I thought the barnett pulled too hard and got arm pump when racing. I've seen other shees w/ the Barnett and they seem to pull easy on some and hard on others. Go figure......
-
Jimmy, I have a 2003 Arctic Cat F7. We usually ride in Fort Kent area, but we might try some riding in Greenville this year. We definately have to hook up for sledding!!
-
Damn!, that sucks!! At least you beat the 350R before it blew. A 391!!!!! How the hell do I compete w/ that!!! Thats alright. I have a buddy that wants to buy my whole complete shee just as it sits......Hmmmm......Now what would I build after that????? Maybe a 403 stroker from Paul Turner!!!! J/k....IF he does buy it though, I will have my custom made Rapshee!!! Try to get someone elses ATV and get back up here before the end of the year. If you come up the night before, we can hit the titty bar....
-
Register in your own state is fine. You can only ride Sundays. They work the pit Mon-Sat and don't want any atvs riding during work hours. I can hook you up in a Motel the night before if you want, just let me know.
-
So far Dayton is still open, the wardens will sometimes check registrations on the side of the road where the trucks are parked, but they don't come into the pit. I have knobbies and paddles. They both work great. The paddles are mint for a lot of the hills. I'd bring both. I'll be in Dayton every weekend. You guys should come up. You won't regret it....

Just for more info. I talked to two friends of mine who race dirt bikes. One has the 426 and the other has the Honda 450. They have both tried each others and both agree that the YZ has more power. Thats the 426, never mind the 450. I don't see Honda having more power, unless they do something different.
-
I agree that it would be nice to have a 4-stroke that'll hold up, but I don't think you'll see it. Previous 4-strokes hold up due to the fact that they are not high revving motors and didn't have enough power to break anything. Today, manufactorers are making 4-strokes that are revving 10,000rpms or higher and producing a lot more hp than before so parts will start breakin easier. The atvs are becoming faster and more comfortable so now people are pushing them further. If you want reliability, buy a 4x4. If you want performance and a machine to put through hell, then get ready to spend some money. I don't think you'll ever find it, and I doubt any manufactorer will come out w/ one. Honda, Yamaha, or Suzuki. Thats my oppinion. We'll see when the new 450 Honda comes out, if they come out.....
-
You obviously don't have a clue, do you. I know a shit load of 400ex's including a good friend and my cousin. They both have blown the motors, bent axles, and had intake problems. Now your telling me about reliability. Whatever. Get off the Honda high horse and get real. I state facts, not opinions. I test real world, not bullshit. I've been around atvs since they started making them and ridden everything out there exept the new yz. Don't try to bullshit everyone on here. The 400ex is far from indestructable. Buy me one and I'll show you. The first 20' high jump I take will blow the intake off and bend the axle. Then I'll beat the piss out of it for 12 hours straight until I cook the rings. I want to see the reliability of that..... Well where is it???? This happens.. I've seen it. I'm not talking bullshit. Don't believe me. Ask the Honda owners in my area. Come to the PIT, thats where you'll see it all.
-
I pulled my packing out for a week because it was all caked up and half gone. It sounded like shit. I repacked it and did notice better throttle response. It was very noticeable on my shee. I wouldn't run w/o it.
-
I find the shee breaks due to owner neglegence and poor maintenance. The shee has twice the parts and needs twice the care. I've seen Hondas break down more than my shee. I'm talking about 250Rs and 400exs and about a dozen of them. Again, they break down to poor maintenance. Yamaha or Honda, they both need proper maintenance to stop break downs. Especially when ridden hard. There is nothin out there that'll last forever w/o maintenance. If it does, then your not riding hard enough!!!!
-
So when will you be in Dayton again so I can check this thing out!!!!!! How do you like it compared to your shee?? Pros?? Minus??
-
Thats what urks me.....Everyone always compares the stock shee which is really detuned and setup for dunes off the showroom floor. Compare apples to oranges. The shee was designed for desert and extra wheelbase for paddles. Don't compare a desert machine to a woods machine. Take a shee, put Pt mids on it, shorten the swingarm 2", move the pegs back, then compare. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think you'd ever think the shee could run and handle so different. The stock shocks on both machines are only as good as the person adjusting them. The front shocks on both machines suck. The Hondas do have better brakes and chain adjusters. I have changed everything on my shee that you've mentioned. I know your comparing stock shees to stock 400's and the Hondas do have the flaws worked out for you, but I'd rather change the shee over, get the handling like the Honda w/ the power of the shee. Why not have the best of both worlds???
-
First of all, I couldn't give a shit what magazines say.... What do they know???? I do race and have raced in open classes w/ 250Rs and 400ex's. I usually lap them unless the track is over 2/3 mile long or more than 8 laps. So your asking me if they handle better???? I don't think so. I too used to look up to the Hondas because of the "image" and what magazines say. In the real world, the banshee is better then what they make them out to be. You just have to set the shee up for mx. I agree the shee is a shitbox for handling out of the box, but has a lot of potential when converted over. As far as bulletproof engines,..........talk to my cousin and my friend Matty and ask them what they think. They rebuilt both of their quads within 2 years. Far from bulletproof...Again, I go by real world testing and ride in sand pits w/ over 100 different bikes every weekend. I see quite a bit and these new 4-strokes don't hold up like previous years. If I had to rebuild a 4-stroke that often then might as well get a 2-stroke.
-
The 400ex is far from perfect. Like previously said, the frame is based from the 250R which had probs in 86-87. The motors have had problems. There has been a few in my area that break down more than 2-strokes. I don't care what machine you have, they will all break w/ an aggressive rider. EVeryone can argue, but why bother until they are both released and go from there.......
