Start at the stator and work your way to the coil and wires. Set your pickup gap to the thickness of a match booklet cover. I think it is .018? Hell it's been a long time, just use a match booklet and you will be fine.
Start testing for power. If your getting everything good, start looking at your grounds. Also make sure that you dont have a bare wire touching your frame grounding out as well.
Although the lights and ignition are seperate, with your lights on, do they try and illuminate when you kick the bike over? This wil help to narrow a few things as well.
