  1. well bud, that's not good. what do you think it came from??
  2. if you still have the piece i'd try some jb weld or something first. or if you know somebody that can do it have them tack it back on for you.
  3. i''m not conerned about the appearance so much as being structurally sound, but it sounds like i should be ok with it. i only need it clean for reassembly and after that it's gonna get covered in mud and stuff pretty quick again anyway. it's a trail bike, not a show bike, lol. thanks guys.
  4. well, i tried just scrubbing it off first, which didn't do much. i took it to work and ran it thru the parts washer for a few hours, and it didn't do much good. i tried gunk engine degreaser and it didn't do any better. other than carb & choke cleaner and a scrub brush i was running out of ideas. so while i was cleaning the top case with carb & choke cleaner i figured i'd let the bottom half soak in the hot water/oxyclean. it's worked wonders for some other things so i figured it's worth a shot. i can't imagine how so many other harsh cleaners / chemicals won't hurt it but the oxyclean seemed to do something to it.
  5. plain & simple, i couldn't get the outside of my bottom case cleaned up with anything i tried, so i decided to just let it soak in HOT water for a while to loosen some stuff up. well i thru in some good ole oxyclean hoping it may help to break things up a bit. when i pulled the case out the outside of it seemed to be lighter colored and the inner side seems to be darker, like an oily type residue on everything. i rinsed and washed it off the best i could but the inner parts are still a darker grayish color now instead of the shiny polished appearance that it had before. wtf did i do here? i didn't trash my case did i?
  6. my shee looks like this now but here are some nicer looking pic's
  7. if i remember correctly the stock cushions are not replacable, so you're probably in for a new basket. i put a hinson basket in mine a few years ago, my last build, and it's been holding up very well since. can't say much about the others though. i got the basket from rocky mountain.
  8. double checking the jetting will be the first thing after getting it running again. i seriously doubt i'll get into carbs yet too. i'm trying to get the shee rebuilt AND looking for a trackwhore bike so i don't have to take my new R1 to track days. so what i listed is pretty much the extent of things for the banshee.
  9. thanks for all the info guys. and it was pretty much what i wanted to hear. it sounds like the 4 mil is the way to go. i actually called Kevin @Herr Jugs Racing today and talked about my options. i think after reading this stuff here, i'm going with the 4 mil long rod and 795 pistons. i'm going to have him do the bore and porting and get the right domes for the 4 mil. as far as the porting i ride mostly trails & some farming areas. most of the trails aren't real tight and there are plenty of open fields and stuff to rip on. there's lots of hillclimbing to be done also. so i'm probably going to go with his aggressive trail port. which if i understand correctly will give more low to mid range increases. so here's the overall plan, tell me if i'm missing something..... - full top end rebuild - aggressive trail port - hot rods 4 mil long rod crank w / 795's & stroker domes - + 4 timing - mod'd shift star & shift shaft - tors eliminator - clutch pancake bearing now with all of this, i have a hinson basket w / stock hub and pressure plate and a tusk clutch kit. it should hold up to this set up right?
  10. i've done a search and found a bunch of stuff but not exactly how a stroker works and what i'll need for one. i'm rebuilding my shee and planning on bore/hone, porting, +4 timing, and doing something with the crank. either getting the stocker trued & welded or just buying a hot rods crank or something. if i went with a 4 mil over a stock set up crank, what else do i need to do? if i understand this stuff at all, a 4 mil gives 2 mil on top, 2 on the bottom. is that what trenching the case is all about and will i need differenent domes in my noss head? if i've read things right, some wiseco pistons used with the stroker make the crank a drop in and go job. it looks like the 4 mil isn't much more $$ than the stocker setup so am i on the right track here? i'd prefer to stick with pump gas too so will the 4 mil push me over that line? i already have the noss head, v3's, pc pipes, pro flow filter, elevation is about 1200ft and running pa summer temps - usually 70-90 or so. i'm leaning towards just getting a new crank cuz i'm sure the old one has plenty of wear & tear on the rods and bearings. this is on my '01 shee and the 2nd top end job since it was new. i already have the crank out and need to know where to go from here for another, a hot rods stocker or a 4 mil.
  11. i've ridden my shee in the woods/trails for almost 8 yrs now and love it. once you learn to handle a shee in the woods, you'll love it too. a few go fast mods and suspension mods and it will be pretty wicked in the trails. oh yeah, and hang on tight
  12. i've used renthal's and primary drive sprockets both with DID chains. i haven't had any unusual issues with either one.
  13. an extra set of hands makes it 10x easier sometimes if you have somebody willing to help. my wife helped me do mine once, lol.
  14. get a noss machine head with the appropriate domes for your elevation & mods.
  15. i would absolutely love to have one. you could start placing orders around mid october if i remember correctly. anyway, it's just not in the budget for the spring. i've been following the concept car for a few years also. but i've bought an '08 grizzly in october '07, that's now paid for and i bought an '08 yzf-R1 in june and still owe on it. so my toy money went for other things than the camaro. i'll be drooling every time i see one on the street, but then again, i can't complain cuz i have other toys instead.
  16. i use the torque wrench on anything engine or suspension related. pretty much everything else is by feel. i was always told to back off the torque wrench to 0 when not in use also.
  17. nothing but craftsman stuff in my garage. i'm surprised to see that craftsman hasn't come up yet.
  18. probably nothing for the shee this year for Christmas. but it is getting ported and rebuilt after the holiday season is over. Christmas for me will be all about the R1 this year. or maybe some riding gear. i'm hoping for some a* gauntlet style gloves to go with my new leathers and boots. i always give my wife a list of ideas - banshee related, motorcycle related, tools, a 3some with one of her friends, but for some reason i always end up with something different. but that's ok, i'll take care of that stuff later myself anyway.
  19. keeping them cleaned out is the best thing you can do, besides not eating any chips or doritos if you're out in cold weather keep your mouth closed as much as possible, the cold air can get to you too. my wisdom teeth experience sucked. i have a mechanical heart valve and naturally on blood thinner meds etc. i spent 4 days in the hospital due to that when getting my wisdom teeth out, just to regulate my meds in case of abnormal bleeding. the worst part was that my pregnant wife ended up in the opposite end of the hospital at the same time due to some complications. but they did let us go back and forth to visit each other, lol. so if you're biggest concern is getting head and not eating pussy for a few days, drinking liquor isntead of beer, and just plain keep it cleaned out, then you have it pretty good bud.
  20. yeah, you need some 'real' bars on that shee. they look like the one's on my grizzly  and i don't like them on it either. otherwise, it's looking good bud.
  21. i have pc's on my '01 and they are great for the trails. trails here in pa are a mix of open woods, tight woods, open farm fields & farm roads, and plenty of hills and mountains to climb. the pc's seem to do great pretty much everywhere, and they do scream on the top end.
  22. cool, thanks for the info guys. i haven't been here much for a while, the shee hasn't seen much action this summer since i bought my '08 R1 in early june. but nothing's changed, this is still the best place for anything banshee related.
  23. ok, thanks for getting me straightened out on all of this. i figured i'd have a good talk with someone from HJR before getting into it, but i didn't want to seem clueless in the discussion either. to somebody of their knowledge level of these things, that probably doesn't take much. thanks again guys.
  24. if i do all of this it will probably be through herr jugs racing, at least that's who i'm planning on at this point. so if i understand it correctly, a 4 mill stroker adds 2 mm to TDC, and 2 mm to BDC, right? thus providing for a larger combustion chamber. porting needs to be matched, need custom domes, & wiseco's to match. ok, so if i go with the 4 mil set up & +4 timing, should i be able to run reg gas, like 93, or will i need 110 or a mix of something? i'm at about 1200', 50-90 temps during my usual riding season. the bill just keeps on growing for this.
  25. so what other changes need to be made if i would go with the 4 mill, beside a few more hundred dollars? i've done simple top end rebuilds, but i'm new to things of that nature.
