We race flat track primarily other than around the yard. I've been reading that the cool heads are a good simple mod to have. They are sort of expensive at $200+. One of my friends said it isnt really worthwile and not to believe everything i hear.

This is on a 94 motor with full FMF pipes and decent carbs. On the flat track we race at you need more pulling power (where the 4strokes beat us) because its paper clip shaped 1/7th mile.

So is it worth it? What dome size do i need?

Thanks

Are those all the mods you have? The pipes and the carbs? Because for the money of a new head you could / should have some port work done first. Eric Gorr does a "woods port" for around $250 that is suposed to make quite a difference in the lower rpm range if that's what you are looking for. There are quite a few threads on here that mention it if you do a search for it. As far as the cool head, If you talk to dlnoss on here about wanting a head he can help you out. Dome size will depend on your mods, elevation, fuel, but yes that can help you out with the lower rom power too. Just so you know if you talk to dlnoss about a head you should probably ask him about his heads (NOSS heads) rather than his competitor (cool head) :D

If you want pulling power i would say go with the head. I noticed a big torque gain on my motor and i went with the 22cc domes. With this size, you can still run pump gas (91) and not detonate. If you want more of a gain mix some pump 91 50/50 with some 112 VP and go with the 21cc domes. You will notice a gain and your cylinders will run cooler as well due to the better coolant flow pattern on the head.I've been told Higher compression is good for bottom end and it shifts your power curve to a lower rev-range. If you're mostly pinned on the track then go with the 22cc so you'll have a little more top end.

I have pro design cool head w/ 20cc domes and it helped me quite abit, especially lower rpm's.. I'd have to agree with ogre, nos heads are good stuff(you can keep your factory stud bolts with nos heads) with pro design I had to change out the stud bolts and will have to do it again if i decide to take them off...... btw if you go to domes 19 or lower most ppl have to use race fuel. .. good luck

i would think a cool heads worth it i was racing some guy exact mods as me but i have a stock head and he has a head with 19 cc domes runing 91 octain up big sand mountain utah, he smoked me by like at least 8 quad lengths. i dont know if its as well in the low end as the top cause i dont have one yet but im preatty sure 50% cooler temps is a good mod for any racer

I had eric gorr (forward motion)port my cylinders, it was the best $250 I spent.I also have the noss head with 19cc domes, also a great mod but not as good as the gorr port work. good luck :bolt:

You dont need a 50/50 mix with 21cc domes, Thats still pump gas :D

I'd get a nossmachine coolhead, porting, and a storker crank  ...then the 4 strokes wont be a problem. Cooler temps. will make ur engine run better and last longer, so yea its worth the $250 i paid for mine.

Well.. Im not sure about that. I was running 21cc domes at sea level and destroyed a set of pistons because I detonating on pump gas. I think it really depends on each bike and the elevation that they are at. I now run 50/50 race gas with my 21cc domes.

NOSS told me 21s are fine at sea level (Im 400 ft above), and I haven't had the least problem yet with 21s and 92-93 octane. Chart shows 156 with 21s at sea level, I just tested and got 152. Unless you are in death valley, you won't have any problems with premium pump gas.

I personally would mill the stock head and run engine ice. The cooling doesnt make a big enough difference to spend $200.00 on. The engine ice will drop your degrees. And the milled head will add the performance you want.

Those cool heads are nice and all, and if someone wants to give me one I'd use it, but for $200 for the head, and another$70 for the domes, I would rather have my stock head milled .035 for $40. If I was worried about overheating, I'd look into a big aftermarket radiator, before a cool head.
