  1. Hard starting when cold is probably the #1 symptom of low compression. You can get a fresh topend and do a couple cheap/free mods at the same time for $300 (like shave the head and port the reed cages). If you compression is low, it will make a difference, so I would check that first if you haven't already. As far as the stator, yes that could be a problem, but you can check it out and see if it's within the specs (about got the Electrical FAQ done if you want to check it out). It could be a potential cause for hard starting, but more likely it'll just quit or you'll have intermittant starting/running problems. The stator is probably 10x harder to swap out than the CDI. If you get a Dyna instead of an adjustable timing plate, you gain the ability to easily select different advance curves as well as a hotter spark. I have one and love it (I also have an RS stator set at 0 degrees advance, yes I've had both fail at different times). Jetting is another potential problem, and may be as simple as being too rich from a dirty air cleaner or adjusting your airscrews (see the Jetting FAQ below on dialing in your pilot/airscrew circuit). Just some ideas, good luck.
  2. Hell yeah you need to tighten that drain plug!!!! And don't forget to keep that AMA receipt, you'll need it at the race. See you there!
  3. Cool. I'll be at Chris's around 9am Saturday, and ready to hit it. Dustin you need help with anything that morning? I can get there earlier if I can help, if not we'll be looking for ya at the preride. If they don't start the whole class at once, hopefully the team can all get together and be first off the line for our class (thought I saw they were starting us 5 at a time).
  4. One mild concussion racing MX on a 250R. One broken fibula racing MX on my Banshee. I don't race MX anymore I've been in a couple nasty wrecks tho, one on a TT track (damn that surface is hard) that looked bad enough to kill all 3 of us but we all walked away relatively unhurt. And then there's the random get-offs racing desert but so far no injuries. My Banshee's good to me, she takes alot more abuse than I receive...
  5. Right on Dustin, good to hear you'll make it, what time we leavin' Alb Chris? I'll give you a call tonight, pin down when I need to be there and what the deal is with the rooms-Josh are you getting one of the two I reserved or not?
  6. Fucking media. I don't care which side of the fence you're on, it's ridiculous how the mass media can and does twist perceptions under the guise of "education". The same goes for any other popular issue; quads, sex, music, violent video games (please), etc. My opinion, educate yourself. If you're old enough to be a parent, you should have been around the block a time or two and see for yourself, if not you're not qualified to rear a child. Make your own mistakes and learn from them, take the cards you're dealt and chalk it up to experience. It takes all kinds, and most of us learn the hard way, but what gives one the right to shove their opinion on someone else? You got an opinion, voice it, just don't expect me to listen or give a flying f*ck.
  7. I agree with everyone else, use the inside-type flywheel puller, and like JKJK said soak it with penetrating oil. It helps if you can flip it up on the right side (if the motor is in the frame use a 2x4 against the frame so the flywheel points straight up) so the oil will gravity-feed between the flywheel and crank. Took me 3-4 days to get my RZ flywheel off too.
  8. Happy Birthday a day late Wheatchex, where you been hidin' at? Autocrossin' or something good I hope, have a good one.
  9. Transvestites...scary. And someone else mentioned imprisonment, my worst nightmare is waking up in a cell next to 250lb. Bubba the hutt. Those scenes in "Training Day", "Pulp Fiction" and "Redemption", not to mention "Less Than Zero" just make my fucking skin crawl. I'd sooner swallow my own tongue or chew through my own forearms.
  10. Happy Birthday Walt!!!
  11. I'd try disabling the TORS system first by unplugging the control box on the frame rail right above the left cylinder. If that works, chances are the switch on the e-brake perch needs adjustment or got water in it (good time to eliminate the whole crappy TORS system). When you rev it up does the right side hit at all or not? If it was just at idle, it could be a clogged pilot jet...
  12. Damn theechozen1, already? You must be riding the dog snot outta that thing when you're home! I vote for Wisecos, and while you have the head off take it to a machine shop and have them deck off 0.030" (or see if boonman is still shaving 'em). You DON'T want to shave the head if you go with Vito's pistons, as the crown is higher and you risk interference (or say if you plan on doing a coolhead with smaller domes-same thing). Along with all the good stuf txblue said, make SURE to double check the ring end gap. Good luck.
  13. Dan's got my RZ jugs now, Walt I'll let you ride it at the next Roostfest as long as you don't put any scratches on my less than pristine plastic
  14. Slow2_2, have you tested the stator? It may not be putting out enough juice (just a thought). You say it's hard to start, have you checked the compression? It idles high; could be an air leak or fuel starvation (clogged pilot, petcock, or stuck float-yes you need to get it adjusted right). Boheme01, it almost sounds like it HAS to be fuel starvation, since it'll run OK when you add fuel...unless you have real low compression and the fuel is sealing the rings better. Have you checked the compression? Sounds like you've tried the simple stuff like fresh plugs and clean air filter, what about fresh premix fuel?
  15. You can't replace the stock ball joints, you hafta replace the whole a-arm (you could try welding in a new one but chances are it won't survive). The most common cause is a cut or torn boot, when water and dirt get in the ball it won't last long. You should be able to block up the front end and look for play, if it is the ball joint it will be real obvious. Good excuse to upgrade your a-arms tho. I think I set mine up with 1/2" of toe-in, it's been a while tho. You sure that tab on the frame isn't bent?
  16. Hey now, there's an idea akpopeye, that reminds me I need to email Dan about my jugs, I have a feeling August will be a thrash fest to get it together and running...
  17. OK I'm pretty sure all the pics will work now, Blacksmith you have a chance to read through it all yet??
  18. LOL! Dammit, I'll hafta fix those links Monday...must dune today...
  19. OK, I found the problem, should be fixed now. Thanks guys!
  20. Can you let all the others load and then refresh it Dirtbikez? Anyone else have trouble with them?
  21. Thanks BdBanshee! I'll get it on there tomorrow...
  22. Thanks everyone! I'll fix that ASAP J.J., just what I needed. If anyone sees anything else let me know.
  23. I go with the YFZ, but that's just a personal opinion. Take a look at the Pro Class standings here on Yamaha's website, overall 8 out of the top 10 are on YFZ's. So... 1)Pretty close but from what I've read the Yamaha is more race-ready out of the box. 2)I run my Banshee in desert XC races, but it's a little more open than woods. 3)YFZ450 right now, but they had about a year headstart on the TRX450R. Z400's are pretty popular too. 4)I still say the YFZ by a hair. Plus I think the Honda is ugly as sin, and I still think Honda is a buncha pussies for disconinuing the 250R when Yamaha kept making Banshees, my $0.02.
  24. You should be fine, your weight will likely be a little more with full riding gear anyway. The difference is in the spring rates and the valving, and it will be a big difference from stock...
  25. Yes, and a backfire is another symptom. Could be lean from mains too small, a clogged main, or an air leak...
