  1. Saturday after a long ride we were about a mile and a half away from camp when this problem started. Every time I'd grab the clutch lever I'd get a small shock. (the type when you jump out of your car and get a small poke) The only thing I could really think of was maybe the ball starting to weld itself to the push rod for the clutch. Any one else have an idea or suggestion?
  2. if it ran good before I would pull your jets out and make sure they didnt pick anything up. I have had that happen to me while I was away. It ran fine then all the sudden it would spit and sputter. I checked the plugs and they were bright white. so I started moving the needles up and it slowly got better. but after tearing the carbs apart I found I sucked some debris into a jet. Just some info from my experience.
  3. this was just over 3 years ago. I do remember a lip but never loosened any bolts to remove it or install it. I got the seal from either the dealer or Vito's (Vito's is right down the street from me). Part of the clutch basket took part of the case out. the small over hang over the crank. Please excuse me I'm not trying to tell you that you don't have to split the case. I just might have been lucky.
  4. Inspect them carefully and make sure they are clean. then apply a small amount of oil to the O-ring to make sure it seals properly and you should have no problems.
  5. Well I never split the case when I installed mine. I know that for a fact. some might have to but didn't. I replaced it when a piece of the clutch basket took part of the seal out. this was also 3 years ago.
  6. what some guys with high Hp engines do is ut a small amount of rtv around the coolant passages. But I would check the top of the cylinders to make sure they are square. Also make sure that both cylinders are square to each other.
  7. The one good thing about the 400EX is you don't have to start it for your wife. All she has to do is turn the key and push a button. A female friend of mine use to own and ride her 400EX all the time. So it is great for women.
  8. here is the part number 22W-24741-00-00 and the part runs $2.66 each. that is through the dealer.
  9. I was stopped once here in Michigan and it ended up being a misdemeanor ticket and a court date. I have vowed not to stop for cops again. I know it is a stupid thing to do but that's me. That sucks! a 700 dollar ticket. That is a ridiculous price. I would take it to court and try to get the fine lowered or claim that you were on private property when he stopped you. Good luck.
  10. CDI boxes controll the spark and they can not run with out them. And yes most CDI boxes have rev limiters. (most of the time the engine wont see that high of an RPM. C-- capacitive D-- discharge I-- ignition
  11. My brother has a 400ex and loves it. It is a nice bike but the seat is uncomfortable. I do recommend getting rid of that foam air filter though.
  12. when I replaced my seal I didnt split the case.
  13. how are your mechanical skills? Do you think you can rebuild the carbs by yourself? That is where I'd start. make sure all your jets are clean there is a main and a pilot in each carb. A lot of the time the pilot jets get plugged with crap. Clean the well. do not mix the parts up. then follow the carb tuning instructions. Do you still have the T.O.R.S. on the bike? Any mods? how did it run when you got it? the more info you give the better understanding of what's wrong.
  14. make sure there is no burrs on the rings and make sure the rings are positioned correctly. Good luck.
  15. you will have to do a compression test to figure that one out. But what normally happens is the right cylinder will start sucking the trans oil through the seal and cause it to burn more oil on the right side. It is like $8.00 for the seal.
  16. you can reassemble with out doing anything but replacing gaskets but it would be worth it to hone the cylinders and install new rings.
  17. wow those must be some big filters. mine don't even come close. maybe you can take a piece of aluminum flashing and make a shield.
  18. some advice for you is to remove the T.O.R.S (throttle over ride system) from your machine. another bit of advice is download the banshee manual from the top of the repair section. a few questions for you do the carbs have some funky unit on top or are they just regular carb caps? how are the spark plugs? how is the fuel and fuel flow? any mods? we can help out a little more when we have a bit more info. be patient and it will run like a top again.
  19. well it sounds like you have a blown crank seal. The one behind the clutch cover. they are not that hard to change.
  20. how do your plugs look? to me it sounds like you are running too lean and that is bad. did you rejet when you put the pipes on?
  21. I had the same thing happen when I was riding and I ended up exploding the clutch. When that happened it wedged pieces between the basket and case. I got it restarted once by pushing the bike back and forth in gear.
  22. I only run race gas when I go hill racing. I think you have more of a problem than oil. and the break in wouldn't cause it to run worse than a one legged dog.
  23. It sounds like you had a grand adventure. next time only put a half gallon of gas in there for your brother. that way he is within walking distance. Or you can carry a rope to tow it back. No body understands that you can't go on those 5 hour trips with a modded banshee like you can a stock 4 stroke. Did your brother try reserve?
  24. I agree with the T-5's I love my pipes. they have a great sound and lots of power. As for tires I just ordered a set of fast trekkers. A friend loves his on his 250R. So I thought I'd give them a try. Also the only oil I run is Klotz super techniplate at 32:1 it smells awesome with race gas and I have never had a problem with it.
  25. here is my truck I have a hard time steering it. It goes about 65-70. the previous owner worked at a dodge dealer and raced a viper. The viper was behind until about 60mph
