I've been wondering the same thing Banchetta, heh. I'm mostly going by my experience on my '96, and from all the other posts I've read over the years... When I ported my reed cages I HAD to go leaner on the needle, it was a total dog. That one clip position made a world of difference, and from what others have posted, aftermarket reeds/cages in general like a leaner clip position (I know Boyeson makes that recommendation). So whenever someone lists reeds or cages, I suggest one clip leaner on the needle as a starting point. The pilots are about the same, it seems like everyone that knew what they were doing would suggest at least a 30 pilot for pipes. One of my first mods was a single K&N, and I wound up going up from 190 mains to 260 mains; way richer than most people suggested but it ran perfect and the plug chop was spot on (plug chops where I started at 230's was dead lean). So when I got Fatty's I knew I'd need larger pilots, just to be sure I made some runs with stock pilots and bigger mains, and sure enough it got HOT. I went straight to 32.5 pilots and it ran perfect, in fact I had to go down one size on the mains and again got a perfect plug chop. When I race close to sea level (I'm at 3500'), I run 35 pilots and it's just right. I don't know if there's really a direct correlation between pilot and main size (like, say 25 pilots for 200-250 mains, 27.5 for 250-300 mains, etc.) but it seems like most combinations we see here are between 300 and 340 or so on the mains, so unless it looks like they'll be close to 400 mains I don't suggest larger than 30 pilots. I usually recommend a 30 pilot for pipes, especially if they have a single or dual K&N, and if they have a foam filter with the lid on they are probably fine with stock pilots...I guess the only time I'd suggest 27.5's is with a foam filter and no lid. Anyway, I try to advise on the rich side for the mains to start with, since most people can tell when it's boggy on top, but with each machine and application being different (sand riding as you know puts a lotta load on a motor) you never know. And mine really likes richer jetting than most (370 mains, 32.5 pilots right now, not even ported), and I admit I tend to keep it jetted on the rich side, but I know it's more an exception than the rule. Most of my riding is wide open, either dunes or TT, so a tad rich doesn't hurt at all. So I guess I don't have as much direct experience as you do on the pilots so I tend to advise on the rich side to be safe, I could be way off but hopefully I'm close and if anything don't advise something that could cause a lean condition. With any luck I'll have my RZ motor together in a few months and I'll have another victim, err, testbed for experimenting on jetting. She might not be quite the fuel whore as my '96 is, heh.

Good one Banchetta, I missed that: larger pilots for sure.

Banchetta is right on. What screw is stripped? If it's like a bowl screw there may be enough material there to just drill & tap it for the next larger screw size...

Huh...all I noticed was a couple threads moved around (and some that should be moved but haven't)...whatever, just don't nuke MY threads (I think about the only ones I start are the wallpapers, heh) dammit!!

I dunno 400grl, I can understand waiting to see how they stack up but I wouldn't completely rule out the YFZ just yet, from what I've seen so far I think it's got an edge on the TRX. Plus the front end is downright hideous, you'll for sure need to keep that Raptor hood off your 440 if you get the Honda... BTW what didja think of the Prescott race? I had a blast, I've been meaning to email Jeremy & Jeff and tell them they did a great job. Cycle Bob took some pix of the TT race but I haven't seen them yet, the only good one I got was that alky Polaris at the drags.

You might pull the carbs and see if there's anything in the bowls, it almost sounds like bad fuel or water in the fuel. You might also drain the tank and check the strainers on the fuel petcock just in case there is a restriction or one has fallen off (mine did and allowed debris to get in the carbs, a chunk lodged in the needle jet and made one carb stick open). Good luck.

The bearings are a 6007RS, it's a sealed bearing. The seals are 62x42x8 and 62x43x8, that's the metric measurements but I think it's also the National part #...one has a larger ID than the other because the brake hub and sprocket hub are different OD. I totally agree with Holyman, put a grease zerk and a releif bolt on the carrier, remove the inner bearing seals, pump it full of grease and you're set. And he's right about the bearings, but where you're from you should have access to high-quality German bearings like SKF pretty cheap (maybe).

ROFL! Damn Holyman, is that the mafioso version??!?!

Cool, yes try going bigger on the mains until it bogs at WOT, then drop a size...so unless you're gonna ride when it's alot hotter than now, chances are you'll never need the 340's; get 360's and 370's just in case. The pilots sound good, if it idles clean and there's no bog or hesitation right off idle, and pulling the choke out kills it, at least you know they aren't too lean (if they were lean it would likely still run with the choke out when warm). I'd leave them in and just play with the airscrews to see if it helps or not. Glad you got it all together and it's runnin' good, I really need to port mine...

The only 4-stroke I'd consider would be a YFZ450...or maybe a Grizz. I like Hondas, I think they are some of the toughest quads built (not necessarily the fastest, but can take some serious abuse), but somebody better make some aftermarket front plastic for the TRX450R, it is just ugly as sin.
-
I'll second that, welcome to the HQ. Even if it's not a Banshee, hope you get a good quad and keep ridin'!
-
I don't know for sure, but I would guess it wouldn't matter as long as the center hole is the same diameter (when the carb is together the main jets are completely immersed in fuel)...at the same time I wouldn't chance it if you can get them both exactly the same, just in case that bevel effects fuel velocity.
-
Yeah, rub it in led...you suck.
-
Heh boonman, I can top that: buy TWO Banshees!! And then take a trip to the dunes (ideally a week in Glamis, but a weekend @ SL will do). Now THAT would be nice...ridin' a Banshee, a babe on a Banshee, sand....gaaaaah
-
Yep. Welcome to the HQ. Ride often, keep the air filter clean (and upgrade the steaming peice of shit stock air filter ASAP), stay on top of the jetting, and have fun. Ask whatever you want, someone will be able to help...
-
Ummm, what was the question? Heh, yes you're in the right place, anything you want to know, someone can answer. And I'm sure you could find someone to ride with up North, Silver Lake sounds like some nice dunes for that part of the country...

Jetting Toomey Pipes And K&n Filters
BenBB replied to screamin_banshee_2003's topic in Jetting & Exhaust Forum
I'd see if whoever did the porting has a recommendation first, but if not I'd start with 360 mains, 30 or 32.5 pilots, and needles one clip position leaner than stock (2nd clip from the blunt end). The mains might be waaaay rich but better to start rich and work your way down than blow it being lean right away. Prolly gonna need higher octane than pump gas too (again the jetting is assuming 32:1 premix ratio), but I'm not an octane/combustion ratio expert... -
You might try adjusting the needle clip position leaner (move clip up towards the blunt end) or richer (move clip down towards the pointy end).

Jetting Toomey Pipes And K&n Filters
BenBB replied to screamin_banshee_2003's topic in Jetting & Exhaust Forum
That's pretty hot weather, I agree with Banchetta on the 330 mains to start and needle in the stock position, but I'd go with 30 pilots...assuming 32:1 premix ratio. -
Nah, I doubt it evil. Just for grins one day I ran a search for "jetting faq" on www.dogpile.com, a metasearch engine I always use, and mine comes up in over half of 'em. The thing is, the last thing I'd want to do is get into a lawsuit, that's another thing that pisses me off to no end; people suing over stupid shit (and making millions because they got burned by coffee or fell down in a store). I'd rather settle up like a man: rock, paper, scissors...or bare fists...or a heads-up drag race...

I just added a disclaimer and copyright to the very bottom of the FAQ, lemme know what you think... Banshee Jetting FAQ, still free

Sounds like the choke jet, are you sure there was something in that passage on the right carb bowl? Because mine is just a blank, the left bowl has the jet and the right does not. Anyway, you should be OK as long as you get all the metal filings out...
-
Thanks Holyman, here's what I sent him via ebay: And thanks for the copyright link Fixitrod, I'm gonna hafta read up on that when I get a chance. I have no intention of ever making any money off of it, just like my little web page and the posts here, never intended for anything other than to help others out...and along come these bloodsuckers. Oh well.
-
OK, still not sure what you did but it sounds like the choke jet...on the left carb (and only on the left carb) if you take off the bowl (the very bottom of the carb, held on by 4 phillips-head screws and when you remove it you can see the main jet, little plastic shroud around it, and the two floats) and look in one of the enclosed passages (much like the pilot jet), you'll see the choke jet. If that's fucked up you may have trouble with the choke, but worst case you can just replace that bowl. BTW the pilots are in an enclosed passage right next to the main jet, when you take off the white plastic shroud or splash guard, the pilot passage is the hole it fits into. The pilots are Banshee-specific, so I hope you got the right ones...

Hockey390, I've got some jetting stuff put together with the help of all the great HQ members, if you want to learn about jetting it should be a good place to start: Banshee Jetting FAQ
