sredish Posted September 11, 2007 Report Posted September 11, 2007 do it like loco said. you don't have to cut the plug, just look at the porcelain and down inside the porcelain. actually, i've never once "chopped" a plug but I know where and how to look at the plug. an old way of doing it is to jet richer slowly until you start to get some rich sputter, then back it off a tad. thats a rough way to do it but works if your that worried. How the hell are you gonna get your head, a light and and a magnifying glass in there to look at it? Just do a plug chop. Quote

I agree, if the bike is running pretty good, a normal inspection will be fine. ive never done a plug "chop" either.. i dont really think its necessary but, hey its whatever this guy wants to do.. and ive sure as fuck never used a magnifying glass and looked into my cylinder through the spark plug hole! haha. That is new to me, I don't think it would be very practical to pull the front fender and gas tank out in the dunes. I suppose I could bring a flexible borescope and take a looky looky..... :ohmy: .....no, just kidding. Quote
Snopczynski Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 Ok, here is how we do it. We We use the plugs that have been in the bike and have color on them. Ride the bike around and get the engine warmed up. Then take off in about a 200 yard stretch and get it in 5th gear pineed for about 4 seconds. Kill the engine and pull in the clutch. Stop and pull the plug. If its lean, the porcelain will be really light brown/white. If its rich it will be dark brown/black with wet fuel on it. If its just right, it will be a cocoa brown color and pretty close to dry. Quote

Most people call a "plug chop" just running wide open throttle for 3 secs or so pulling in clutch, killing motor, coasting to a stop and pulling the plugs and looking at color. Grey/tan lean Chocolate brown/beer bottle color Good black or wet is rich. Quote
