Check with your local DOT. there is a legal version made in europe thats about 55k or better price wise. i know some states allow them in certain configurations for farm use and extreme inclimate weather conditions. other than that i have never heard of them being street legal, and highly doubt it would be legal as a "passenger vehicle", let us know if you find out otherwise though. I just want to be able to cruse to the trail and be legal, but taking the old shee to work once and a wile would be bad @$$ to!!! That bike has been for sale a few times. I've never seen the street legal claim before though. I am willing to call BS though! Basically it is a DOT, federal law, that street vehicles cannot have a solid drive axle. There has to be a differential of some sort. If he in fact even got this thing registered, and got plates for it, it was definately an oversight on someone's part at DMV, because it is in no way shape or form street legal as it sits. Also, I don't see any turn signals on the shee for sale either. There used to be street legal kits made for banshees and other quads, and they used a sport bike swingarm, and a single rear wheel to get around the DOT law, and they had turn signals, and brake lights too. But I heard that the company stopped making them due to liability reasons, but that is going to be the only way around it. Do a search on here, and you'l turn up a lot of threads similar to this. The short answer though, is there really isn't a good way to make a banshee street legal. Quote

The guy with the bike on ebay lives a couple hours away and invited me to check it out when he comes up this way.. Whats the deal with the law not allowing straight drive axels.. I realize trailers dont have straight DRIVE axels but they are a straight axel.. Furthermore a car with something like a mini spool which locks both axels together is basicly making that a straight drive axel.. Kinda weird and would like to see how the law in Colorado reads on that.. As far as not having turn signals.. That don't mean squat... I have buddies that have bought bikes and one of the first things they do is pull off the ugly ass signals.. I know it may need them to register but otherwise hand signals are legal.. RIPPEN Quote
Lepew Posted April 15, 2007 Report Posted April 15, 2007 To be street legal a vehicle must meet the US Dept. of Transportations vehicle design safety and equipment requirements and US Environmental Protection Agency's emission standards. That really puts it out of any states jurisdiction to allow any offroad vehicles "street legal" The Banshee far from meets both and if it were modified, who modified it would have to certify that it did. If it was modified in 2007 it would have to meet all 2007 standards. The standards are pretty strict, look at all the crap Ford has done to the Powerstroke to meet 2008 emmission standards. I once had the State of Oregon give me a license plate for my dirt bike. Unless someone pushed the issue, if I added a Street Kit I could have rode it kind of legally on public roads. Quote

RIPPEN A spooled or welded diff definately isn't street legal. A locker is, but only because you can engage and disengage it. The reason for not allowing any kind of solid drive axle, is because the vehicle will drive like complete shit on pavement. Ever tried to drive a truck with a welded diff on pavement. Now fuckin' way. Same thing if you try to make a tight turn at slow speed on a banshee, just sucks. Your probably right about the turn signals, I know on my R1 I pulled them off the day after I got it, but then I did the integrated ones that go in the brake light. I still think this guy is straight BS, if he did manage to get plates for that shee it's because somebody at the DMV slipped up. there is a street legal banshee on ebay right now. Guy has a buy it now price of 45k It's a few posts up in this thread. Quote
