Keep water out of airbox!

Im always getting water n alot of soup-ie mud in my air box when I hit the trails,,..... I have to hit the mudholes. anyhow,. anyone know how to retard this? I was just thinking of this black cloth 3M makes for french drains that only flows water through it in one direction. I mean hold it flat one way water goes right through,. flip it over not a drop. Im going to try to find some on a construction site this weekend and see how well it flows air with it tight over the top and a vacuum in the intake. If Im not trail/woods riding,. I could always just take it off if it has a small bit of restriction. Or maybe a louvered cover? Input?

if it flows water one way, then i asume you are going to put it on this side out? if it flows water, then as you say, it will flow air? if water and air flows thru, wouldnt mudd and muddy water flow thru it to? just a thought. hope you get my point. something to think about.

yea I know,. its weird you can see light through it both ways so it has to be able to breath,. I just need to see if its enough not to choke it. I have no idea how it works, but it does.

yep, been running stock with oiled uni outer no lid,. but I just bought a k&n filter.

my lid has 4 large holes close to the corners

& the water that comes in drops near the sides (the center over the filter is solid)

... it was on my shee when I got it & I havent seen it any where but that's what I would look for...

if you find one let me know My buddy's looking for one

One trick that we used on wet days when I raced MX was to use duct tape and seal up all the openings under the seat. That kept water from being able to splash up into the airbox.

I'd remove the airbox, get dual K&N Pods and avoid all water...Spoken like a true sand-only rider...eh?

 

Sorry...don't mean to waste your time with a BS post, but couldn't resist...(water scares me.) The guys are this forum are the greatest...if they can't answer your question, no one can.

I've seen a few guys use pantyhose stretched over the airbox. It kept most of the water out, and was very breathable. Personally I just go slow through the muddy sections if I can't find a way around through the trees. Plowing through water just gets me muddy and the shee harder to clean. And it tends to make the carb slides stick (yeah I know I could seal that up easy, but Im lazy). I have no problems with an open airbox, a couple pieces of mud will make it into the airbox, but nothing big.

 

Outerwears does or did make an airbox cover fabric for that purpose, not sure how well it worked though.

What he said, and you might want to think about using a pro design foam filter instead of a K&N. I've always had a lot of problem with the K&N's in the mud. I do a ton of mud riding and have had mud water in the intake tract quite a few times with a K&N, and have never had it once with the foam.

I ride in a lot of water and mud sometime, i live close to the Atlantic ocean. I found that removing that clear plastic cap under the airbox help. It let more dust to go in, Outerwear take care of it, but it drain the water quickly and prevent it of splashing all around the airbox and on the filter. But like the others said, avoiding water holes is the best, because when you fil your boots with water nothing else is gonna stay dry :sweat:

I agree 110%. K&N might flow more air, but they don't filter as well as foam. I've had mud on my filter before, never once found anything in the intake tract. Personally I think Twin Air makes a better filter than the one Pro-design uses (Uni?). But thats probably personal preference.
