Yamaholic in va. Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 Ive had my banshee for 7 years, talked to someone the other day that claims you can do away with the base gaskets all together and just use silicone. He said must be done on a fresh bore job to prevent the piston rings from hitting the wear ridge. Anybody heard of this???? Quote
RBD Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 My question to this is why? Is this to lower port timing and bump compression? Also, I can think of better sealents to use for this other than silicone. Quote
GYTWYPT Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 I think i am in the why catagory also Havent heard that one yet. but sounds like another one of those redneck roadside repairs that wallrat spoke of Let us know how it goes Quote
holeshotkid Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 A fresh bore shouldn't have a wear ridge. And if it did, lowering the cylinder would only make the rings ride over the ridge. Quote
locogato11283 Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 this is dumb. just use a base gasket. Quote
D34 Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 this is dumb. just use a base gasket. 319345 i wouldnt say its dumb... its a way to lower port timin if needed... also a great way get ur squish adjusted correctly without decking the jugs or having special cut domes/head... yamabond/threebond is what i use Quote
NYUK Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 it s a cheap hp gain. just hope it don t leak. Quote
fixitrod Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 I heard of using two base gaskets to raise the exhaust ports but this is the first time I've heard of no base gasket... learn something everyday I guess Quote
locogato11283 Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 when i had the passion setup it used the spacer plate and just used a high temp sealant shit on either side so i can see using some type of sealer, but for the everyday average joe not looking to change port timing id say its best to just use a base gasket.. GYTWYPT Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 (edited) [Ya they tried to say in another post that you could use to base gaskets if you ran a 4mm stroker crank. fixitrod I thought i remembered that name i havent been on here in awhile buy it looks like you joined the same day i did. Good to see some of the same people is still on here Looks like my posts number started over. oh well i get to be a no nothing newbie again. fixitrod Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 The dates restarted when Lee converted to a new forum software. Most of us log on everyday so we ended up signing backup on the same day. The numbers have carried over for the last couple upgrades. Glad to see you are back. Quote
Yamaholic in va. Posted February 9, 2005 Author Report Posted February 9, 2005 Okay, somebody has got to have tried this before. Its an easy way to increase compression. I figure the base gasket is at least .015 thick... Quote
bkabina Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Gaskets vary, but stock is about .030. Quote
D34 Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Gaskets vary, but stock is about .030. 319993 and cometic high comp gaskets r bout .018 Quote
Wassup350 Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 this is dumb. just use a base gasket. 319345 I agree, my reasoning is this, if your gonna use silicon instead, what do you think is gonna happen when you tighten down your jugs? The silicon would probably ooze out and get into your water passages causing your coolent to flow less freely. Plus there is no guarantee that it aint gonna leak. You could just have a custom gasket made that is thinner then stock. Quote
