While Glamis remains the ultimate sand destination for the ultimate sand ATV (Banshee), there are still places you don't want to camp if you want to take full advantage of what Glamis has to offer. I was wondering if anyone on the BHQ had some advice for the first time camper at Glamis. DUNEDEMON Posted February 18, 2004 Report Share Posted February 18, 2004 I've been going to Glamis for almost 10 years now, and have camped just about everywhere. I personally HATE the washes, one road in and the same one out, busy when time to leave, dusty as hell, noisey 24 hours a day. The flats are ok on an "off weekend", on a busy weekend with all the vendors that place is like a mall at christmas time. Gecko is cool, depending on where you stay it can be busy and noisey late at night and early in the morning. Cement flats is nice but fills up quickly. Roadrunner (the loop at the very end of Gecko Road) is my personal faveorite, but is the first spot full on busy weekends. We usally stay out in the dunes off Gecko, kind of between the drags and the vendor pad (sweet maries) put the truck in 4WD, air the tires down to 15psi and go for it. I stayed at wash 14-16 a couple of times with my exs friends and like that the best because not that many people like to go that far back there so less dust and also when you head straight out into the dunes you go through little then medium size dunes which are my favorite becuase of the things you can do on them. Big dunes you just pin it and wait to turn. They are still cool but get old quick for me. I like the ghekko loop too but I have only visited friends there. Wallrat Posted February 19, 2004 Report Share Posted February 19, 2004 I've stayed at the washes and at DUNEDEMON's spot just off of Gecko and I'll agree that the washes are awful! Granted, if you like traffic, dust 24/7, and jerks riding through your camp at 1am then the washes are perfect. Washes are a bit closer to the hills but olds and comp are just a few minutes away from Gecko and Lizard and China are doable (although I did run out of gas a mile short on the way back from China. We probably had people ride near our camp 3 times/night between 9pm-8am. Most people were respectful enough to swing wide around us. Its funny cuz people told me to stay at the washes the first time I went because it was more families and less rowdy than Gecko. It was a busy weekend when I stayed at Gecko but the only time it was noticeable was when you went near the road or the vendors. And it's not about being anti-social, it's about enjoying your trip while camping in a safe / secure area especially if you have kids, but most of all enjoying yourself. Who wants to wear a dust mask at camp when you get back from a ride? or put one one first thing in the morning? Not me, thats why I do not reccomend camping at the washes. Travis's Banshee Posted February 20, 2004 Report Share Posted February 20, 2004 If you really want the full Glamis experience, you need to park across from the store in the garbage flats on a busy weekend. I got there late on a thanksgiving weekend and was the only place I could find to park the Motor home. Yes its as bad as it sounds, but the riding made up for it. If you go w/a motor home, I recommend parking off Gecko. Otherwise air'em down and head out. When it comes down to it, there is no bad parking there. Expecially now that i'm landlocked in Oklahoma. Every once in a while we'll go hang out at the store really late to see all the folks that can't find their group or are just lost. It is like your own private area. No bikes running around at 2-o-clock in the morning, No punk-ass kids playing music all night, its great. This place is ideal for thanxgiving. Great family place.
