The CPI’s were definitely keeping it hot as they’re pretty much past their capabilities at 500CC, let alone a ported super cub. The switch to Shearers will help, but after riding for a while in the dunes I bet you’re still fighting heat. They will be sweet for short rides and dyno runs, but a race gas motor with timing over 500cc is gonna be much happier with a big bore pipe for longer rides. Quote

I didn't really go on any long day rides last time but it seemed to be holding up ok at night. I might have to bite the bullet and switch to big bore if it starts heating up. Do you know how it will effect the power in the motor? My lights went out went out at the hill on the trip so I had to ride back without lights. I wasn't able to find any broken wires, maybe the stator went out? I was thinking about doing the DC conversion so that I can install some LED head lights and maybe a light bar, but heard mixed reviews on them. Quote

DC conversion with JL Engineering battery pack is a nice upgrade, don’t exceed 70 watts. someone in the wanted section was looking to trade big bore shearers for small bore, I’d jump at it if they’re still available Quote
kevshiau Posted January 22, 2024 Author Report Posted January 22, 2024 I have been trying to find a 22x8 10 paddle tire but came across a 22x10 10 paddle. Has anyone had any experience with this tire in the dunes? Is it worth trying out or should I keep looking for 22x8 Quote
kevshiau Posted November 20, 2024 Author Report Posted November 20, 2024 (edited) I ended up converting my gas to E85 and got it tuned. I haven't taken it out yet, but I can already tell it is a night and day difference from what it was before. I told the tuner I just wanted a safe and conservative tune, it dynoed at 112 HP. I have some big bore pipes on the way, it should free up a couple more hp and help keep the engine cooler as suggested by trickedcarbine. Turns out my stator was ok, it might be my light/kill switch. He helped me hook up a Milwaukee battery to small light bar in the front, and I will try to replace the switch to see if that will fix my problem with my headlights Edited November 20, 2024 by kevshiau Quote

It’s a 2 hour drive for me to San Diego and I was just tired of taking it down to him. Motor ran like shit and was not happy or impressed with it at allI switch because e85 is wayyy cheaper than 110 and it keeps my motor cooler. I got my bike tuned and dynoed with Mike at so cal racing Quote

kevshiau Posted November 23, 2024 Author Report Posted November 23, 2024 Mike switched out my carbs, adjusted timing and clutch. Not sure if there was anything else. I took my bike to HJR when I blew my old motor (7 mil, stock cylinders, blaster pistons). He built my new motor and put it back into the bike. I forgot to add, I will be switching my front sprocket to 16 tooth Quote

I dealt with Kevin about ten years ago, to make a long story short, the build simply never ran right until I gave up and went to another builder. One thing I noticed about him was that he simply guessed at what could be wrong, he would say things like pour fresh fuel in there, check timing, check compression, change your plugs, adjust air screws, but never knew how to fix things, other builders when i would ask about my issues would figure things out pretty quickly, that to me was a serious red flag that HJR really doesn’t know what he’s doing since some of those issues were pretty obvious and simple to correct, especially if you are a legit banshee builder. I ended up going to Eric Friend from empire industries when he was still in riverside, night and day difference in build and tuning, he built me a 90+ hp 421 cub, shearers, 39mm pwks, race gas domes, etc, totally different animal than the stock cylinder, stock stroke ported build HJR was supposed to do. I don’t know how people say Kevin does good work, I know of quite a few builders here in SoCal who are fixing his builds all the time. You made the right choice by going with Mike, he knows his shit!
