Make sure when you pull up to the line or stage that you load the gear (slip the clutch until you feel the bike start to creep forward) then hold the bike in place with your foot brake. You don't want to load the gear, then let the bike relax backwards to where the back-cut on the gear starts to push it out of play, or to the point that when you dump the clutch you "slap" 2nd gear really hard. If its cut for a 1-5, then 2nd gear is going to be side-cut, and if you don't pre-load 2nd before you take off, that slapping motion when you take off in 2nd can potentially bust the dogs off 2nd if its a hard launch.
