smokin 2 stroke Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 what the best way to ship a motor..like the kind of box and evrything.. Quote
hyperlite33 Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Are you talking complete or disassembled engine? If complete, I think a wooden crate would be the best... When I shipped my engine disassembled...cases, crank and cylinders, I cut a super thick piece of foam to fit the cyliders exactly...put a piece of foam between the case halves and wrapped it all up in bubble wrap and sent it in a carboard box with fedex. Hope that helps! Quote
Bansh-eman Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 i sent my entire motor to FAST, i just got a rubber made tub and put old sheets and pillows in there to make sure it was safe, then drilled hols in the lid and zip tied the top. whole motor cost my like 100 bucks to ship each way Quote
fastrnrik Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 Rubbermaid tubs work great. Coolers work great too. Quote
Animalman294 Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 I built a wood box and used my front motor mounts and made two brackets for the back and shipped it to FAST by mounting to the inside of the box. One twenty foot piece of 2x2 and a sheet of CDX roofing material. Jeff said it was the best homemade box that he has seen that was actually mounted to the inside.............. Quote
Dinner Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 i sent my entire motor to FAST, i just got a rubber made tub and put old sheets and pillows in there to make sure it was safe, then drilled hols in the lid and zip tied the top. whole motor cost my like 100 bucks to ship each way Same here  Went to local hardware store and bought a plastic container for like $16. Bought some cheap pillows and surround the entire engine with them. Closed the lids and drilled holes throughout them and zip tied the lids together. I probably used like 10 zip ties, but it worked well IMO. Quote
00tbanshee Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 when i shipped my motor to kev i just put it in a heavy duty box that we get electric motors in at work.put a peice of heavy carpet in the bottom and stuffed foam a bubble tape all around it and on top so couldn't move.it was just the cases with crank and topend all bolted together.cost i think around $65 and that was across the states Quote
dajogejr Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 We build our own crates with 1 by 1s as the frame, 3/4 plywood as the tops and sides. Probably costs 30 to 40 bucks for the wood and screws, etc., but I know my motor is going to get somewhere safe. We bolt the motor down to the crate, then pack it with some foam, plastic bags filled w/ peanuts, etc. I've seen horror pics of too many totes dropped off loading docks. With the reinforcement we put in the crates, they'd have to drop it pretty high up and multiple times.... Quote
black sunshine Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 I built a crate out of some 2x6's I had laying around and used plumbers strap to hold her in there. Was heavy, though. The magic number for ups is 80#, I think. Mine was #116 and the cost about doubled ($156) I think next time I will get a Rubbermaid container, put the motor in a plastic bag, and use that soft foam-o-fill. Squirt it in the container and drop the motor in there after it has set up a little, but not totally. The upside is your builder will likely charge you less to ship it back because they typically have better rates because of their volume. Quote
NOS_350x Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 Get an old ice chest. and fill it with spray foam (in bags) it wont move and the icechest is more than strong enoguh to take a fall. You also get nice handles too. Just tape down the lid and slap the address on there. Quote
Animalman294 Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 Ya, I've heard of people using the spray foam and setting the motor in it before it hardens and it is a custom fit because it is the exact shape of the motor.............. Quote
