Ok, so I blew the bitch up this weekend, haven't had a chance to tear down yet, but left spark plug is full of melted aluminum. Bike has been jetted the same for 6 years, but based on the fact she melted, I would assume lean (yeah, I know I should have done a plug check) I was at Pismo and it got cold. Should have known, she was running too good if you know what i mean. Anyway, So now that I am going to be doing a full rebuild, I am looking at all my options. I rarely drag race, just dune. Although, I have never really had a bike that was quick enough to really be a drag racer, so if I actually build some power, I might do it more. Anyway, I am considering a duneable override. What is the life expectancy of one of these things? Are they as reliable as a stock trans. I really like the idea of the override, but am not really willing to give up reliablility to get one. I am tired of going on week long trips and working on shit. I just want to build a really strong duning bike that I can load in the trailer and take to the sand and not be wrenching the whole time. I am a maintenace fanatic, and dont mind working on my bike at all, I just dont want to do it WHILE on vacation, you guys get my drift. Oh, yeah, my current plan is probably a stock cylinder 4mil motor. Thinking shearer inframes and 33 or 35 PWK's. I only have a +2 swinger, and am really happy with the way the bike handles, so I dont really want to stretch it way out and do a CUB. So based on the power that I will probably be making, is the override worth it for me?? thanks Phil

as long as you dont let them backload they will last. i remember reading something from WCR about they are safe to backload upto 8,000 RPM but i wouldnt chance it if its possible to get around it.

just like anything else, when you cut metal you run the chance of weaking its integrity, but thats a risk most are willing to take. at this point these guys cutting them have the bugs figured out. if for any reason yours goes out its almost certain its not because the guys cut it wrong. ( this is assuming you get one from an experianced place)

they work great. ive had 2-4 duneable from dave moore and redline. both are great. you can downshift them with no clutch or with clutch and they will shift smooth as butter up on full throttle.

so no trial riding on them lol

no you can trail them you just dont want to go balls out on a long stretch getting your RPMS at 13k and then let off the gas without pulling the clutch. I'm not sure what kind of trails you ride, but where i grew up the trails where not very long so they didn't allow you to get your RPMs very high.

The way you make it sound it wouldn't like a dune bike either. Atleast for me when I'm dunning it is a lot of short high rpm climbs that you just let off the gas when you make it to the top. Does that mean one would blow up or could/should?

im not sure about 13K.. but some.. not maybe we get long 6th gear for a good time balls out....

i was just asking... i dont think ill ever have the power for a override...

if i was out west where the big sandboxes are i would be running a 421 PV motor... but for how i ride and where i ride its not worth it to me..

just pull the clutch at the top or shift and it will be fine. not sure how your riding habits are but normally when i hit the top i let off the gas and pull the clutch to down shift.

I would say if youre if really not a hard dragger, then you really dont need the override. I dont have one on my cub, and I drag the shit out of it, dont seem too miss it at all. JMO

i would tend to disagree.

there are plenty of dune bikes that pull alot of power that need to run lockups. this makes shifting a pain. And because of it beng a pain the duneable is the remedy for it.

This year will be a good test for a duneable tranny. There is a 1-5 in my bros cheetah hill bike. When we climb at walden you are in and out of the throttle the whole way up the shoots. If it lasts the season at walden i will be sold on them, time will tell. Im not convinced about them, thats why I put a stock tranny in my hill bike, but if my bros lasts, i may reconsider next year.

I didnt have one in my 421 cub and didnt really need one, it shifted smooth as can be. I know one guy that doesnt need an overide is Bigred, that dude can shift a bike so damn fast it isnt even funny. Never seen a guy shift a regular tranny like him.

seeing some of those videos at walden i can forsee you guys having problems with a duneable. the only way you wouldnt is if he doesnt let off the gas suddenly. It will be tuff because there is alot of slipping the clutch to get up some of those tight hills that s a few times on the way up.
