Dgrey Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 My wife and I are thinking about purchasing a toy box to sleep in and haul my quad out to the desert with. Its a 21' 2000 Carson Fun Runner with all the amenities. Our tow rig is a 2002 Silverado with a 5.3L V8 and Z71 package. Does anyone have experience on how hard this will be on the truck towing out to Gordon's Well and Glamis with those huge grades that are on the way? Especially on the way BACK from the desert there is one huge grade. The truck is stock. I think that the trailer weight is 6500lbs I THINK. I don't know the truck towing capacity. The trailer has brakes Quote
Snopczynski Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 I dont think your truck would like it all that much. Whats the trailer weigh? Quote

The trailer has brakes its going to put a hurtin on it for sure. i have a Dodge Turbo Deisel 2500, when we pulled ym toyhauler it wasnt "hard" to pull but it diffenatly takes a toll on the truck, i want to say my trailer was 7200 lbs and we had 2 quads. you will make it but its going to EAT gas and be pretty stressful on the motor. i see guys all the time pulling shit out there like that. just make sure your tanks are empty. i always fill up in el centro. there is the big truck stop on the right side. go there and fill up and stop there on your way home to dump. id say you will be ok. just be sure that you check your manule and make sure your truck rates the trailers weight (which it should) Quote
RadarRacing Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 When we bought our "1/2 ton towable" 27' Toyhauler 7500 lbs.. I had an 01 1/2 ton Dodge 4x4 with a 5.9 magnum (360 cid) motor and on slight grades my truck had a hell of a time pulling it empty even. My truck was rated for it but it made my trans temp light come on and it got 4 mpg. One toyhauler that you could pull and is a kickass setup is. This http://www.cheyennecampingcenter.com/C18DFWP_value.html . I got the http://www.cheyennecampingcenter.com/C27DFWP_value.html and it was heavy for my 1/2 ton truck. I got a 07 Chevy Duramax Diesel Crew now no probs. Quote
jayzx10r Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 I think it depends on which version Silverado you have. Looking online, the 1500 has a Max towing capacity of 8800 lbs and your motor makes 285HP. The Carson website shows a 20' and a 22' model this year. 4,900 and 5,100 lbs dry, 800lb tongue weight, and 7,000 max loaded weight. They also offer an "ultralite" model that is 36-3800lbs. Different models depending on floor plan. Here is a link to their site: http://www.carsontrailer.com/subs/brochures.html I'd say you can do it but the climb coming back to San Diego is a bitch!! 3800 feet in 12 miles. I always get motored up the hill by the new generation High Output Chipped Diesels that are getting 16MPG to my 7 or 8MPG..... :yelrotflmao: But I really don't care because if I were in a hurry, I'd be somewhere else!! :yelrotflmao: Quote
Snopczynski Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 The neighbor has like a 21 or 22 nrg toyhauler. He had a 1/2 ton 5.7L dodge ram hemi. It hated that trailer. He got a 6.7L cummins and now he tows wih ease. Quote
Toybreaker Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 I had a 1998 305 Z71 with a baja 16 foot Toyhauler pulled it with 2 banshee's a a generac 5500 generator 6200lbs loaded... hates the hill 35-40 mph at 4 mpg your 5.3 will pull better but mileage will suck. Get a rebel or a diesel to pull... Quote
Deeooo Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 I have a 99 4.6L F150 and a 21ft lite Attitude, I don't pull out the 8. But my truck hates going up palomar, and those head winds in Ocotillo. But I honestly can't tell the difference in mileage or stress on the truck from one quad to three. But make sure your tanks are empty towing, HUGE help. Quote
Bansh-eman Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 you go out the 67 to the 76 and take that all the way out? dude thats worse then just sticking to the 8. its all one lane and windy in the mountains. once you get ovr the hills on the 8 its smooth sailing from there Quote

FASTOYS Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 Been there....Done that. It WILL pull it BUT it WONT like it~! Make sure to get equalizer hitch and sway away bar. Prepare to hear the roar of 5,000 rpm all the time on hills or head winds. I would recommend a diesel or smaller/lighter trailer. Quote
Deeooo Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 Yeah. I like the windy roads  !! My truck hates the 6% grades out the 8, and I hate the traffic I hit going south on the 15 to get to the 8. I have gone both ways with no trailer, and had better times and less fuel used. But that could just be me. Quote
wesw Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 my 5.3 tries, basically i run it at 65 mph, in 3rd gear so it dont shit can the overdrive. 3000 rpm usually hits please 5200 rpm or against the rev limiter, sounds like its going to throw a rod some times. but the trip to waynoka for me isnt to hilly just bucking the wind can be a bitch. last time i went there i got 7-8mpg. at 65. yeah a diesel is the only way to go, im looking a dmax or stroke, just got to work some funds around. bansheefreak pulled my trailer last time, it honestly downshifted into 3rd gear like 4 times if that. usually could unlock the torque convertor and just pull. i was like must be nice. he has a dmax. theshee Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 Ive got an 04 1500 Dodge Ram with a 5.7, and 4.10 gears, and I pull the shit out of our Haulmark 8.5x20 with 5 bikes, or 4 bikes and the toolbox. There is only one hill in Wyoming that gives me fits and I can still go up it at 60. I run it at 75-80 on the interstates, and get around 12-13 mpg most trips. Its no diesel, but gets me where im going. Quote
