jmoore Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Check my mods below. Here is what I am thinking next. A coolhead and some v-force 3's. I was contemplating porting but am a little shy about ripping into my engine when it is relatively so new, and i've never done it. Any ideas from the pros? Quote
99Banshee Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Porting would be nice.. and v-forces make a nice gain also.. Quote
Old Two-Smoke Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Save your money on port work. Buy yourself a Clymer manual, and a cub kit. Take your time and it wont take you over two days. I just did my 05 took about 8.5 hours start to finish. It totaly blows away my wifes ported 04. Two cycle engines are the hardest to design but the easiest to work on. I will never waste money on porting again. Just my 2 and a half cents Quote

jmoore Posted February 24, 2006 Author Report Posted February 24, 2006 I do have a clymers. And trust me, it is full of greasy fingerprints allready. The only thing I worry about the whole porting thing is getting it back together without doing any damage to the pistons/rings. Quote
Fastrat Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 (edited) If I were to send mine out to get ported, I would wait for top end rebuild time. That way you could have them ported, then bored and put it all back together with a nice new set of rings and pistons. I would probably go with a coolhead, reeds and adjustable timing plate(not sure if you have a key). That way you could get some power now by bumping timing and compression, and can still go any way you want with porting later while using the parts you already bought. It's what I would do in your shoes. It really all depends on how much money you are willing to throw at you quad. Good luck Edited February 24, 2006 by Fastrat Quote
ranceego Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 i am no pro, but good carbs and porting go hand in hand, the fuel and air mixture has to be just right Quote
odaen Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 porting is the 2nd best bang for the buck after pipes. not everyone that is wanting their cylinders ported is gonna want a cub setup. cubs will indirectly hit the wallet harder (carbs, swingarm, clutch) more than just porting your stockers. yes, they will develop a ton more HP in most cases, but if you are wanting a mx/dune port rather than a drag port, a cub is excessive. so, what are your needs? where you gonna ride your shee? what is your skill level? what is your budget? those are questions that you should contemplate, and then people can help you with recommendations. jmoore Posted February 24, 2006 Author Report Posted February 24, 2006 Thanks for the advise guys. I have decided to just add a coolhead and some v-force for now. I will wait till I become a little better rider before I go mental fast. Quote
banshee tuner Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 You allready have a shaved head, you wont gain from a new head unless you need more cooling ability. If it were me I would get the porting. Quote
fastbanshee4u Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Porting all the way,way more for the money than some flipping little reeds that cost.$200.A good ported 350 with just pipes and good pipes is FAAASSST! When I race 1/2 mile flat track I dont worry about somebody who has a big engine or fancy names on the cylinders. Quote
BigRed350x Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 I would go with porting. The cub cylinders will give you a huge gain, but there is a LOT more expensive involved than just the cylinders. I am already into mine a good $1500 and still have a good 1-2k worth of parts to order just to get it running again. Then I have the other 1.5k worth of non-essential stuff I'm doing. Porting is def. the way to go. Keep in mind though that to really wake up a good port you will need some bigger carbs, and the V3's and an aftermarket head. Yes you will notice a big gain with just the porting, but to get the full potential of it, you should go with bigger carbs at least. Quote
