I was riding around in second, hit a small jump and started to turn around. When this knocking/clunking sound started  , at first it sounded like either the magneto was loose or maybe the clutch, but after romoving both covers i could rule those two out. So it has to be internal, any ideas what may have happened. just put in a new HOTRODS long rod +4 crank last january, so i'm thinking its not that. Tranny? what could have let go in there? i'm pulling the motor in about an hour or so <_< . Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brian

try to recreate this sound by rolling it in neutral...make sure its not the chain, pull the head first to see what you can see...if its coming apart anyway it doesnt matter the order you remove parts, good luck and let us know what the problem was

Sounds like the exact same thing that happend to a buddy of mine :( When we pulled his apart we found a piston that was trashed.... Like fast87 said check the obvious simple things first then I would go for the head and jugs.

gaskets are cheap, pull the jugs and make sure everything is ok, could be a peice of piston getting between the rod and the case :shrugani:

The claw washer and sir clip popped off my idler gear behind the clutch basket once and made a shity noise that sounded like a piston gone haywire! dont rule this area out..

well i just came in from garage..... and the verdict is..........no fu**ing idea  checked everything. split the cases and everything looks good. all crank bearings good all bearings associated with tranny are good, nothing loose or broken. the only thing i found inside was the o-ring on the stator side of the crank shaft had broken and the broken piece was collected on the bottom half of the case (so the bearing is spining freely). and inside the clutch cover there is a collar that holds the bearing for the main shaft of the tranny in place, and one of those screws was missing. But there is nothing i can see that would be making the noise that i heard. sorry this is so long but were can i find a replacment o-ring for the crank bearings? thanks, Brian
