FoxBansheeRacing Posted April 6, 2004 Report Posted April 6, 2004 I was going to be opening up my engine today but 3 or 4 of the screws that hold the clutch side cover on are stripped. I tried using one of those screwdrivers you hit the end of with a hammer and turn at the same time, and a couple of them came loose, but theres still a few that wont come out. Am I going to have to take a drimmel to it?? Any other suggestions? Quote
NYUK Posted April 6, 2004 Report Posted April 6, 2004 small chisel, use a corner of the chisel to start the screw moving in the loosening direction,it will come right out.i usually just beat the biggest regular screw driver into the head of the screw, make your own groove.take them out then replace them with allen heads. ranshee Posted April 6, 2004 Report Posted April 6, 2004 Did you use a screwdriver with a flat tip. A philips with a real blunt tip. Quote

nater006 Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 My $.02 from taking this thing all the way apart in the last couple days and putting it back together... I use vice grips to grip the head and turn the ones that you can. Or, you can cut a slot in them with a dremel and use a flathead to get them out. Replace them with allen bolts though.. that is for sure. Quote
Leadfoot350 Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 make sure to use your sears screw driver so you can use the lifetime warranty. I would try the chissel, the screw driver that you hit the end of it but try to make a slot on the head with a dremel and once you get them out use allen ones and use blue lock tite on every bolt on the damm shee. You will not have to tighten it that tighten it that tight and it will hold. I learned this the hard way. My bolts kept falling out. BLUE LOCK TIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
ledofthezep Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 Can ya get a small set of chanell locks on there?...have had to do that a time or two myself. Quote
eehsnab2 Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 when I strip a screw I usually break out my dremel and make a slice in it the cut off wheel that will fit a flathead screwdriver (large). Never failed me yet. Quote
nater006 Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 Another option.. you can pop the heads off with a hammer and cold chisel. Then when you pull the cover off, there's usually a good 3/8-5/8" of thread or shank sticking out that you can grab with channellocks or vice grips and unthread. I did this to a few of the cover bolts on my clutch cover (stupid phillips heads!) and then off to the hardware store for replacements. Quote
troyminator Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 I used a pair of small vice grips. I knew the screws were toast, so just loosened em up with the vice grips and then turned em out the rest of the way. L8R T Quote

Usually you can get some vise grips on the outside edge and break it loose enough to screw out. Quote

Well kinda, mentioned chanell locks, guess that's what I get for growing up on a farm.^^ Quote
FoxBansheeRacing Posted April 7, 2004 Author Report Posted April 7, 2004 I tried vice grips after the impact driver. It may have not worked because I didnt really have one small enough, but I think its just because the screws are on there so damn tight. Quote
