Was hoping someone could help out in describing what has happened in the pictures. Was running in cold weather at the ice drags. I thought I had it tuned in for the cold. Is this typical of detonation? Something else?

Looks like detonation damage to me. It also looks like the rings are melted into the piston and then maybe part of the ring is either gone which scarred the piston up or metal of some kind has hit the piston. Either ring piece or crank bearing. There is detonation damage there too from high temps but detonation marks are mostly on the squishband area of dome and piston. You have that plus what looks like ring hitting piston. Detonation causes temps to skyrocket very quickly which probably ended up doing the frint side of the piston where the ring is melted into it.

check the edges of the outsides of the base gasket..    would have been good to do a leak test before tear down BUT  it needs to completely come apart.  check crank or replace if needed.

Looks like you need to check crank really well to me!!

It was in the low 20's. I forgot to mention that the plug strap on that cylinder was gone after that last fatal run. The base gasket on that side looked fine. By the way. Anyone have really nice cylinders for sale?

I think an intake, base gasket, or left crank seal is most likely the cause since the right side piston looks fine.  This assumes the jetting is the same on both sides.
