figuare9 Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 Wanted one since I was 9 years old. Love them to death. I finally got around to buying an 03 limited edition banshee in great shape. It ran like a top the first couple days I had it. It idled perfectly and accelerated like a rocket. After a few days of riding, it's starting to sputter BAD after mid throttle. For instance, second gear, right about as I'm in the power band and want to crack the throttle it won't go. Just sputters and acts like it's not getting enough fuel. It seems to sputter at full throttle only. I can get up to it's max rpm, but not if it's pinned. Never did this right after I bought it. Maybe 10 hours on it and it started to do this. It has FMF gold series exhaust on it, the guy said it was jetted with the pipes. It's NEVER been rebuilt, or fouled a plug in it's life, and it's never been taken apart. One thing I did notice, is that there's a male/female connecter (3 prongs) right above the head of the motor that's unplugged. When I plug it in, it won't idle, and it doesn't seem to get up and go as fast. It's currently unplugged. . . runs better, but I'm not sure what this is yet. Could reeds/dirt carb be causing my sputter? I was thinking plugs, but they're light brown, seem okay. I'm unsure what jet size it is, but it sounds like a main jet issue. Some pointers would be nice before I take it apart to find out what's wrong. Besides my sled, this is my first two stroke I've ever owned, so I'm not 100% familiar with them yet. or really at all haha. But some advice would be great. I'd love to hop on it and ride, but if I can't pin it, there's no fun in riding a banshee. Like I said, this just started happening. Quote

When i first got my shee there was many things wrong with it due to careless previous owner. To begin you made a excellent choice by choosing this site here. The best place to get info on anything that has to do with banshee's. Great site sponsors to help you out with parts and many knowledgeable peeps. That plug your talking about i think that may be your T.O.R.S Throttle over ride, some bull shit system yamaha put on banshees. There is a Topic on how to remove TORS. Using the search on this site it should help you out on the details on how to remove them. Next i would try to take out your carbs and clean them thoroughly making sure your floats are up to spec and other debris shit like that. The most important advice i ever got here on HQ was get your self a Clymers banshee manual for your bike that will become your best friend. Good luck and let us know if you need any help. Quote
camatv Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 is the air filter dirty? did you mix the oil in the fuel correctleyy is the engine set up for 110 or somethign like that and you have put 87 in it? Quote
camatv Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 the clymer OR the haynes manual is great i kinda prefer the haynes. the OEM manual is very expensive and can be hard to understand by most. they dont do a very good job linking things together like the clymer or haynes. Quote
figuare9 Posted June 5, 2010 Author Report Posted June 5, 2010 I run non oxy 91. I mix it 32:1 with AMSOIL dominator. Same thing the previous owner ran. The owner also gave me a service manual with it. Not sure what it is, probably oem. Quote
figuare9 Posted June 5, 2010 Author Report Posted June 5, 2010 What's the best way to clean the air filters? soap water? I know they need to be oiled, can I use regular synthetic two stroke oil for them? Quote
alf44 Posted June 6, 2010 Report Posted June 6, 2010 Check your pickup on the stator side also. Is the crossover tube on between the carbs. All hoses in proper place? Plug tops tight. the little cap on the plug. Must be tight. Get a tors eliminator kit. I offer one that has everything you need including new tops, tap and drill and new cable. Shoot me a pm or give me a call anytime. Quote

My carb's look normal, and there isn't a single wire going into/out of them. I bought it with the cable above the left cylinder already unplugged, and I thought the the TORS has wire going to the carb tops, also, how do I check my pickup? Edited June 6, 2010 by figuare9 Quote
2002shee Posted June 6, 2010 Report Posted June 6, 2010 Just because the plugs look to be ok doesn't mean they are firing 100% under load. Toss in a couple new ones and try it, could be that simple. Quote
figuare9 Posted June 6, 2010 Author Report Posted June 6, 2010 oem plugs? anything special, or just match the model number? Quote

firebanshee Posted June 6, 2010 Report Posted June 6, 2010 When you replace the plugs you should put on new spark plug caps also.Just unscrew the spark plug wire ends off the wires and trim the end of the wire and screw the new ones on.They have an internal resistor inside of them that fail and cause runability issues, this is a common problem.I like to change mine about once a year before they fail. They only cost about 5$ apiece,NGK sells good replacement ones.If you don't replace them with a resistor style cap then you need to make sure and use a resistor style spark plug, there has to be a resistor in the system or you will damage the cdi.I have resistor caps and plugs but i have heard you can use one or the other with no damage.Older banshees ran a b8es plug which is non resistor and newer ones run br8es,which is a resistor plug. Like I said, this just started happening. sounds like u got dirt in the carbs.take em apart and clean em.make sure little brass washer is under main jet.as for no one has been in there and its never been rebuilt than its not set up for a high octane as cam suggested.do a quick float check as u should pull bowls and clean.they should be 20-22mm from gasket mating suface of carb body (gasket rmoved)to the top of the float.adjust accordingly.make sure air filter is clean.if u pull carbs to clean as u should, remember the bowl with the brass bb on outside goes on choked carb(drivers side),and make sure ur slides go in with cut out towards the rear,as u can put them in backwards.if that doesnt work,if u have a see thru filter going from petcock to the carbs, get rid of it.u might even have dirt in ur filter in ur tank petcock(unlikely tho but possible).i personally always fouled out resistor plugs such as the br8es,so all i run is the b8es.half the price too.
