firebanshee Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 I am going to try a wheelie bar on my bike at Albany sand drags, i was wondering how far off the ground i should set the wheel off the ground for the best traction and launch? My bike is lowered to about 4 inches off the ground and i run shocks and not struts. Quote
tidos76 Posted July 12, 2009 Report Posted July 12, 2009 fro wha i have read u want it about a coke can off the ground.4-6" Quote
quadgod211 Posted July 12, 2009 Report Posted July 12, 2009 yea a pop can is what i set under mine but i run fresh dirt...if you run in everyone elses ruts or tracks then you might wanna go a lil more higher..depends on the track i guess... our track is dirt and the ruts can get 3-5 inches deep at times...but i learned that if you set your bike up for launching in ruts then when it gets down to about 4 or 5 bikes left you end up getting fresh track and you run off your time... hope that helps some matt Quote
firebanshee Posted July 12, 2009 Author Report Posted July 12, 2009 Thanks for the input, any info helps, and it looks like both you guys have your bikes set up well for drag racing, thanks again. Quote
badassbanshee479 Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 I would strut the rear if you are gonna be running a bar..... Quote
quadgod211 Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 yea your gonna have to run a strut if you wanna hook any at all also....... Quote
firebanshee Posted July 15, 2009 Author Report Posted July 15, 2009 What is the best material to make a strut out of? should i use a chunk of square aluminum or something like chrome alloy tubing? Quote
Natemills8 Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Just use 1inch square tubing thats what we use around here Quote
quadgod211 Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 yea the square is good..i used 1inch steel pipe..its hard to drill were its round.. just dont drill your holes to loose fitting becuase they will egg shape in no time and you'll have alot of play... matt Quote
No Limit Powersports Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 How far off the ground the bar is means nothing what your looking for is weight transfer and that distance 4-5" will only work with certain length bars. What if my bar was 10' long then 4-5 inches would only lift the front tires a inch or so but if it was 6 inches long that would prolly lift it a foot. Most of the time we set are bar height by trial and error you want as much weight transfer as you can get but you dont want your bike bunny hopping all the way down the track so you lower it but too low wont give you any weight transfer and it will just spin. So every setup is different you will just have to try it. Quote

I think i will make a rear strut and try it, thanks for all your guys input. Quote
Ieat4strokes Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Just make the bar to where its adjustable.....I ran 2 1x1 bars bolted to lower holes in carrier, one from each side and one bar wit a T and some angle iron that bolts to where the grab bar goes and it runs BETWEEN the 2 lower bars, drill several holes in the middle bar, coming from grab bar area and run threaded rod through it with nuts.....the several different holes allow me to raise and lower the wheel..... depending on the track...... 00tbanshee Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 if you are going to be running a shock on the back you are going to have to hook the wheelie bar just to the swingarm and when you set on it the bar is going to come off the ground.it will work but just going to have to play with it.around here they seem to hook better that way.i always just ran a strut in the rear and set it about 4 to 5inches off the ground.i made the bottom bars with 3/4 chromolly and the top bar was 7/8 Quote
