  1. yes if it is within specs it would probably be fine. i would want to do both myself. what happened to your other cylinder/sleeve for it needing to be replaced.the mechanic is wanting to do both to do a complete job and so every thing is new on both sides so he knows that the top end will be healty.also so he dont have his customers coming back to say he does shitty work.he's just covering his ass and trying to uphold his reputation for future work.in other words most mechanics out there if there any good wont do a half ass job.
  2. check to see if your carb slides are operating up and down all the way with out starting it.also check to see if you have a kink in the throttle cable.your coolant leaking from the overflow tube could be several things.check the cooling system impeller/water pump.could be the head gasket blown or not installed correctly.see if you have pressure building up b4 it gets to operating temp.the popping could be several things, could be ignition, timing, air leak carbs etc.get a service manual will make things clearer for you diagnosing problems and future problems.good luck.
  3. I know a lot of people have probably posted about this topic in the past. I'm being spanked by a few sport quads out there that aren't banshees. I have an 06 with t6 pipes and jetted. Nothing else has been done to this bike. I like to keep it as close to stock as possible. Anyways, as soon as I hit 3rd gear everyone passes me up. I take off in second when we go head to head and I must be doing something wrong. Anyone have any tips? I'm doing something with the reeds soon and maybe a boost bottle. Cool heads down the road, but nothing too drastic. I love banshees, I just want to be able to show other people why I do. Please help!! dude how heavy are you,and how long have you been riding.even though you havent done much to your shee something is wrong with your set up.not long ago when i was stock wheel base and only had a piston kit jetted stock carbs and a 14 tooth front sprocket i was completly spanking guy's i ride with.trx 400 yfz 450 raptor 660 etc.you shouldnt be gettin spanked you should at worst be running with them i would say, someone correct me if im wrong.rider makes a big big difference but motor/hp does help.and your t 6's are fine better than the pipes im running by a little bit.no one has mentioned weight transfer to you.i say make the back just a little lower than the front for some traction.also play with you suspention setings can help alot. badbanshee's have serious traction problems.the 4 strokes are hooking your spinning.lower your rear some and i bet you do better.also sit way back on the seat when in dirt or sand till you get moving and slide forward after moving.when i first got my banshee my buddy's yfz 450 was a good race he wont hardly ride with me anymore.if your a real light guy have your fly wheel lightened but not good if your a heavy rider.are you still running your snorkel and stock lid.what main jets are you running.definatly advance your timing will make a difference but run super unleaded.there are many other simple things you can do just adjusting etc.there is alot that these guys arent telling you simple stuff that dont cost money.what air pressur are you running in your rear tires etc.get some port work and have yor head done and those 450's will have gravel marks in there plastic.bob at rb racing will port your cylinders for 225.00 and does good work.if i can think of some other tips i will fill you in. ps i had to edit to give you a example,my other quad is a 03 ltz 400 with a athena big bore kit,hot cams, hot rod,rev box trinity stage 5 full exhaust,k&n no lid jetted plus a bunch of other stuff.i out run a stock raptor with a pipe and jetted just the other day and my z 400 dont stand a chance in hell against my banshee in no way shape or form.you need to find someone you can trust to set up your bike 4 you.and like i said get it ported the difference in power will be nite and day.good luck
  4. polishing is very simple just takes a lot of time.I use a right angle die grinder with 3m scotch brite pads or sand paper 3m pads to get the paint or coating off.then wet 400 sand paper then wet 800 sand paper till all the little swirls ad scratches are gone, the use wet 1000 till it looks good.after that buff buff buff till you get a mirror image.the thing about polishing aluminum is every time you buff it it just keeps looking better.like after your done and a week later buff it keeps looking better and better.I've done many street bike frames and wheels etc.not hard to do just takes time.the more time you spend the better it looks.
  5. when you had the top end done what all was replaced.was it board, honed new pistons or just rings.did you get all new gaskets.I can't believe you didn't get new plugs on the fresh top end.I take it you have several used plugs since your cleaning them.if it didn't get new plugs what else wasn't new.do you have a list of parts that you bought for the top end.
  6. you sure you don't have someone playing with your brake bleeders.sounds really strange that you have 2 quads doing the same thing.
  7. I have in the past owned a 250r and also a 300ex.I would in no way try to compare the 2.they still make pleanty of parts for the 250r.the 250r I owned back in 1991 was a rocket.when I purchaced it never done anything to it but a clutch and regular maint.,rode it for 2 years sold it for tripple the money that I paid for it.kinda wish I didn't sell it kinda miss it.plus there is only one of every thing instead of 2 of every thing like the banshee.I wouldn't sell my banshee but wouldn't mind owning a 250r again either.sounds like a good deal on the 04 banshee aswell.if you could swing both is what I would do.extra crank, cylinders, transmission, cases etc.
  8. everything has just about been covered here from what I can tell.are you sure you haven't missed something somewhere.you may have over looked the problem.its probably something simple like the muffler bearings lol.
  9. I live like a hour from clarksville,I've been there several times and have yet to see anyone drag racing the sand bar.I've seen a few locals riding the trails.I have heard that people show up on sundays when the water is low.how many people show up and when.
  10. you mentioned that it quit running on your last ride b 4 doing all the work to this point.you also mentioned that it is kicking back.I would say you have aleast a timing problem.while reading when you said it was kicking back my first thought was a sheared flywheel key.my guess and with out being able to lay my hands on it is only a guess is you have a twisted crank shaft or you have a stator probem.I had a real simular problem to yours a while back and the stator fixed it.I was getting weak fire and wouldn't fire all the time.mine would run but run crappy with poor performance.I replaced my stator and it was back to hang on and let go this way.I will have to say I curious on what wrong and am looking for the results.
  11. if your engine is running fine until you engauge the trans sounds like clutch basket of trans.until you described the shifter rod coming out and play in the trans shaft gear by the clutch basket.sounds to me like you need a trans rebuild.also why your there with the compression readings you have. bore, pistons and rings doesn't sound like a bad idea either.sounds like maybe one of the 4 trans shaft bearings took a sh!t causing other problems for you.if it was me I don't think I would try to start it any more or you may spend mo money than you need to.I also believe if you were having crank bearing or rod bearing problems you would notice it with or with out a load on the engine.if the crank bearings were gone you would probably be leaking something through the crank seals.
  12. there all good machines, depending on what kind of riding your going to do.i ride a z400 also a banshee.i really like my z400 good trail rig.its small and can do tight trails with pleanty of tourque/power.the dvx400 has the same power plant as the z400 so myself i would choose the z400.the kfx400 also has the same power plant as the z400 all 3 quads use the suzuki dirt bike engine.the only 2 complaints i have with the z400 is the 5 speed trans and the (acct) aotomatic cam chain tentioner.i have installed a few d.i.d. chains.but it is still a great quad.the yfz 450 also has the yamaha dirt bike power plant and also a great quad, sits low and handles better than the z400 but more money.look on ebay i seen 08 model z400's from a dealer on there the other day for like 4,500 no bull.thats cheap now days for a new quad.hell i paid 2,500 for mine used.hope this help some.
