HolySheeet Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 OK, where do I start. I bought an 88 banshee not to long ago it was very clean with several modifications. I had it on the trails for the first time and the engine seized. I hadn't even got out of 4th gear which sucks. Here's the thing I tore down the engine and found out the problem was that the lower left rod bearing had failed. My question is when I replace the rod and bearing and start to reassemble the engine is there any things that I should look out for or be aware of? I have downloaded the repair manuel so I'm ok with the basics. This is my first engine tear down and I don't want to screw it up. Also, I was wondering what would be the best gaskets to use? A little info on the engine: I had noticed during tear down that this engine had a fairly recent rebuild, new pistons, a new hot rod crank and rods, K&N air filter, FMF Fattys with power core 2 silencers, stage IV intake and carb, new clutch. There proubly more but, I'm just clueless thus far. Quote

travis6767 Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 well you should get new crank bearings and check everything for cracks,breaks and wear, pry wouldnt hurt to put all new seals and bearing in the bottom end with it being that old, and for gaskets i like cometic i have never had a problem with them Quote

My husband has put me on a tight budget though. As far as I can tell the crank, rods and bearings were/are all new. I haven't seen any cracks or wear marks as of yet. I was going to send the crank to a professional to replace the rod and bearing and for them to make the crank true. I also had contacted Hot Rod to see why their bearing had failed they suggested that there was a possible air leak from a faulty seal or gasket so I really want to make sure I get good gaskets. Quote

98golded Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 The banshee engines are probably one of the most simple engines there are to work on. I was surprised how easy it was to put back together after I'd split the cases the first time. Now it's a breeze. Just take your time and look everything over really well, and I'd agree that replacing the seals would be a good bet, also make sure your cases aren't damaged or anything of the like, or even your cylinders.
