Snopczynski Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 I usually use coolanol in the banshee. I dont use automotive coolant, its hard on the rubber stuff in the cooling system. Quote
felcon edition banshee Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 i use any coolent i find dont need antifreez coolent in the middle east. idk if bottled watter is bad i doupt it but it is quite warm over here. As long as the bike doesnt get to warm it'll b fine i guess Quote
Z0sick Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 its hard on the rubber stuff in the cooling system. LOL... Who told you that? You do realize that 99% of cars utilize RUBBER hoses? Quote
Snopczynski Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 (edited) LOL... Who told you that? You do realize that 99% of cars utilize RUBBER hoses? I am a Saab Technician for a living, and I was an Audi Tech for 7 years. I am also a Master ASE certified technician. So I have one key point here to shine some light on. How many new cars do you see with green antifreeze in them? I haven't worked on a car in a couple years that has had green ethylene glycol in it. All the cars I work on have orange and pink silicate free ethylene glycol in them. Ethylene glycol is basically an antifreeze compund. Silicate free and low silicate ethylene glycol is an antifreeze compund, a moisturizer, and a lubricant. It is easier on cooling system metal, plastic, and rubber compounds. You want a silicate free or low silicate coolant in your bike to keep down on cooling system wear. Usually the rubber hoses in a cooling system will begin to detoriate after a while with regular antifreeze. I have only replaced one saab or Audi hose in 8 years from a coolant related detoriation issue. Edited October 24, 2007 by Snopczynski Quote

If that is the case, why is it that the manufacturers still use the "green stuff" in quads? :geek: I thought all the rubber components in the cooling system were more susceptible to heat. I believe the owner's manual calls for eythlene glycol based coolant. That's what I use, with a bit of water wetter and it does well. I wouldnt use bottled water either. Its got minerals in it. Either use distilled or get the premixed stuff or get what everyone else uses, engine ice. Quote
dajogejr Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 I just run water right out of the tap...but since it's gonna be real cold here real soon, I'll switch to automotive based 50/50 antifreeze/coolant and water mix so my shit don't freeze up and crack... I understand the long term effects on a car, but I don't think anyone puts 100,000 miles on their banshee...either. Boy...I sure would love to try...though... Now I know what you're thinking...I run alcohol which burns colder, and I only drag race. But... In my 4 mil cub last year, with a LOT of compression and timing and on race fuel, I ran straight water in the system and I'd beat on it for a while in the dunes, NOT just drag race it. Quote
Snopczynski Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 (edited) When I originally drained my stuff out of my rhino and my banshee, it looked like coolanol to me. Its not even the long term effect on a car. Manufacturers who were having issues at 15k, 20k, 30k went to the 100k pink and orange coolant to get rid of split hoses, bad water pump bearings, and leaking water pump seals. If you guys want to run antifreeze, then do it. I dont give a shit. But if someone asks what I recommend, I say coolanol, or water wetter with just water. The majority of hose failures these days is from petroleum based products getting on the hoses and causing swelling or splitting failures. Edited October 25, 2007 by Snopczynski Quote
theshee Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 Guess ive never really thought about what color to use green or the other kind. I know there are about 6 trucks on our ranch, all 1980 models that have never had anything but green coolant in them and never had a problem. Quote
RIPPEN Posted October 26, 2007 Report Posted October 26, 2007 I have worked on cars/engines most all my life.. Some of my best friends are "ASE certified mechanics" and I myslef have spent a few years working in a auto shop.. I have NEVER heard this claim.. I have heard that the reason for using the orange vs green is because the green is hard on the aluminum parts.. IE the heads on never GMs.. Iam no expert on how it all EXACTLY works or is but Iam sorry.. I have NEVER seen a hose fail due to using regular (green) antifreez and have a hard time believing it... RIPPEN Quote
