I did search and find some answers, but want to ask again, to those who did put the powervalve motor in their banshees, would you do it again? The reason I am asking is i have 2 RZ 350 motors lying in my garage and my hands are itching to put one in the banshee, I know what you need and the exhaust changes and everything, I know some guys that has part out their RZ banshee and thats why i am asking, were they not happy? Will you put back the Banshee motor (if you dont care how much the RZ setup has cost and money is not a problem) or will you stay with the powervalve motor?

Thanks.

too much work! don't do it! send me the motors so you won't be tempted!!

yes, i do it again. it was slightly frustrating when it didn't fire at first but i got it figured out. to me if feels like it runs better all around and is easier to ride on tight terrain/trails. if you have all the electronics, do it!

oh, i'd still be interested in the other motor!

Although mine is not finished yet, I have ridden one. In my opinion Yamaha should have incorporated it in to the banshee to begin with.

It really depends on what you are looking for.......

If you are looking for a full out drag motor, the RZ is not the best choice. The Cheetahs, Cubs, Twisters, T-Rex's, and so on, are gonna be better for drags. The RZ setup, is a great overall setup, you will have a real nice smoothe, and broad powerband. Stock for stock, you will more lowend and more topend than a banshee .

Although with the right port work and a nice little stroker crank you could have an easy 80 + horse engine that would flat out rock. You could have your cake and eat it too !

They will require a little more maintenence than a non powervalved cylinder, because they are sealed with O-rings and bothe valves are coupled together in between the cylinders, the power valve servo drives the left powervalve which is coupled to the right. you want to make sure they are clean and operate freely. If not it couild cause problems and ruin the valves. Obviously you will want to run good gas and good oil in these engines to help keep carbon from clogging up the valves. There is a few more electrical components to keep in check also, but overall your looking at an engine that was factory rated at 59 hp for U.S. models and 63 hp for 1986 and later Canadian models.

If you already have the Banshee bottom end, I would start with that and use the RZ shift drum and forks, the RZ has rollers on the forks and the drum has a little bit smoother paths for the rollers to follow resulting in a smoother shifting transmission than the Banshee. Th RZ transmission has a wider ratio gear spread for on road use as where the Banshee's transmission gearing is better suited for off road.

( Once I get mine done ), I will never go back. The biggest reason for me to use this set up is because of the uniquness and to use Yamaha production parts. I love to ride long wheelies and this set up will be a plus for that also.

Hope this helps you make your decision.

Never ridden one, but I have wanted to put one together for a long long time. Some of the parts like the pipe adapters and electronics are tough to get a hold of. I almost bought the one that Matt96shee bought, but I backed out at the last minute. Big regeret. If your interested in selling one of those engines, hit me up, might make for a good next winter project. Ohh, forgot to add you'll also need special pipes so they clear the powervalves. PT mids are what most guys run.

I got the majority of my stuff on Ebay, but these places might be able to help you out. If you are looking for electronics, and or other parts. I also have a guy's email address, he claims to have a dozen or so RZ's that he was parting out, but I haven't talked to him in a very long time to know what he still has or not.

I am from South Africa so the motors is FAR from you. Anyways i am a RZ350YPVS builder so know these motors very very well, I know of 2 companies that make ALL the electronics for the RZ/RD350YPVS and LC YFZ350 Banshee, they make the stator, control units for the powervalves, cdi, they even make programable cdi and control units, so if you can get a motor, electronics aint gonne be a problem at all. They make reliable stuff. The cdi goes for about 60 euro, programable cdi and control boxes at good prices!! Oh yeah and regulator rectifiers and you can buy the pick up coils seperate.

In South Africa you can still buy the RZ cdi and stator new from yamaha thats for the 31K.

Thanks

hey man, who do you know that make the electronics? i know of rddreams and zeeltronic, or something like that. i don't need anything right now but a programmable cdi and pv controller sounds like fun down the road!!!

You will have alot of fun with the RZ project. The best thing is that most people will never know you have any RZ packed in there. To this day everyone who checks out my quad has no idea what's packing, I have to tell them. As far as some of the feedback contained herein I agree with most of it. The RZ is a very rideable powerplant that has more bottom and top end then a conventional shee motor. One thing that still is a mystery to me is peoples perspective on the power delivery. Most say that the power delivery is very smooth??? I unfortunately didagree. I have about 400 miles on my RZ quad over the past year and this thing absolutely rips the tires loose when you crack the throttle. It can be smooth if you want it but if you ride a shee like most people you will go through a set of rear tires in a hurry. It does have a light switch power band just with more torque down low.

Mine too Chris!! :ninja:

I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. I might consider a cub or cheetah or something as well if I had the funds but if I had a spare RZ motor I'd be buildin' it right now  I wouldn't go back unless I had a catastrophic failure and couldn't find a replacement; as far as the guys getting rid of them they may have had some kind of misconception about the difference, it's kinda subtle in my case at least; it's not like getting off a Vespa and onto a Hayabusa. To me it's still a screamer just different than most

Agree BennBB, It's all about being different, But really, I am very impressed with the RZ motor. It has great power everywhere and is very universal in what you can do with it.

It's something Yamaha should have done all along, but then it would be one less of a mod the consumer / rider would have to figure out or experiment with.

Jim at PassionRE told me that it is going to be a better rounded / overall engine than the cub motors ( not more powerful ) for my riding needs especially when and or if I get the Zeeltronic ignition, powervalve controller for it. As he stated " having your cake and eating it too " more bottem end then a stocker and the top end of a hot duner. I bought the Prodesign Cool head for mine so that the untrained eye wouldn't see the YPVS, trying to be a little bit stealthy I guess.

Have fun with it.
