davem06
My banshee is making a ticking noise. At silver lake it was heard by rriggs and some others. I did as rriggs said to check stator and flywheel and stuff. It still runs good and everything but Im worried from reading all this stuff, so what should I do. What do you guys think it is. I can really only hear it at idle. Its pretty loud.
RNBRAD
Make sure your flywheel is not touching the pick-up coil, also does it change when you pull in your clutch?

Fly wheel isnt touching the pick up, It doesnt change when I pull the clutch.
dajogejr
That little motor runs good, the bike was on the trailer before I had a chance to hear it that last day we were there in 06. I would take the left side cover off and start the bike, see if you can isolate that sound. Does it get faster as you rev the engine up? Is it louder or quieter when it's cold/warm? You've said you've ridden the bike quite a bit since last October, still runs great, but the tick is still there. I'm wondering if it isn't something silly like a pinhole in the exhaust, near a weld, near the hangers or maybe even at the header/stinger tube meeting.... I took that cover off and the noise was louder, just couldnt isolate the sound. I kind of hear it getting faster. but its louder when the cover is off. I personally dont know whats up. I still ride the bike and it runs good. Starts good and all that. its like the same when its cold and warm. Im ready to just put it in the back of my mind and keep riding and see whats comes out of it. Still runs awesome. One clamp is fucked up on the header stinger tube meeting. maybe its that........I will change the clamp and start it up soon. But if its not that, then what should i do? Pull off the flywheel and look EVERYWHERE for wear marks, or scrape marks. If it were crank or rod bearings, it would only be getting worse, and probably would have seized up by now to be honest. I can't say for 100% sure on the crank, but....normally crank bearings don't last long when they start making noise like that. Make sure all the wires and clamp are out of the way for the stator, check all the windings, check to make sure the bolts are tight, check to make sure the pickup coil wires are tucked, and make sure the pickup coil has the correct gap from the flywheel magnets (.015 to .018)... I'd love to take a look at it Dave, but...I've got my own projects going on for sure.... I worked on jmkampala's carbs yesterday for his Frankenstein collection. Good news is it fired up first kick, bad news is the slides are a little sticky...and his clutch is WAY out of adjustments. So....my plate is a bit full right now!!! No problem man, I got a flywheel puller at home and I will do what you said. If I can't find anything I think Im just gonna ride. Hell, you'll probobly be able to hear it when I ride the sand this year lol. If it blows then I'll know it was something internally I guess. lol I do agree tho, if it was a bearing, for how much Ive rode it and beat the piss out of it here. I'd be stuck in the ditch. Now I just gotta get them carbs and everything on heh. Thanks for the input on my situation Dave.

I know a group of us are going the third or 4th weekend in April...if you and pops can make it out there.... We might have to stop by and drag ol' Rodney out too.... I'll get a fishing pole, some 20lb test and a beer can to lure his ass out.... LOL...
majicmike
You might have a lifter tick......................... :: J/K just a little joke lol It might be the piston return spring as well :yelrotflmao:
woodro77
i had a weird noise on my motor after the second time i rebuilt it , thought i was going to have to rebuild it again , ended up being one of the pipe springs rubbing against the pipe , only did it when it was hot , i guess the metal expanded and rubbed , i was very happy when i found what it was . Probably the weekend you guys go out there just so i can meet some you guys  I'd probably meet up with Dave in Chatham then go from there. Hopefully you figure out what is ticking in your shee Dave. Could you take a little vid of it and post it up?
.
does it sound like a lifter tick sort of? Or one of those desk ball thingy's that have like 5 balls attached to strings and you lift the one and it transfers the energy blah blah blah..... If it is, I've had the same noise through 2 top end rebuilds now, and its something I just learned to live with. I'm tearing the engine down completely for my stroker crank and gonna see if it goes away. I'm guessing its a crank bearing just being a little noisy. I thought it was something with the stator too, it was definitely noisier when I took the cover off. Pulled the stator, put an adjustable plate on, made sure nothing was rubbing, and it was still making the noise afterward. Run it till it breaks....thats my philosophy when you cant find where its coming from...

Dave, I bet he has the same ticking sound that i'm having. soundssort of like a buzzing sound and its coming from around/inside the stator cover?? my frankenstein collection huh..... :yelrotflmao: :yelrotflmao: speaking of starting on the first kick....... well i went out there the day after we worked on it and guess what..... yep you got it..... No start.... im about to the screw it mark and say its a warm weather bike and i'll have to find something else for the cold...... It could be remnants of a welded clutch push rod. It could also be a tweaked shift fork or a burr on the shift drum. Have you tried the rubber hose in the ear trick to see if you can narrow down where it's coming from more?
