Handyman Posted July 9, 2006 Report Posted July 9, 2006 Well I lost my 4L60E tranny Thurs. at 37K('04 silverado ecsb 1500, 4.8L). I changed out the fluid and filter and put everything back together and the wife went to drive it about 2 hours after i was done and called to say the truck wouldn't move forward. I got home and thought she was crazy so I backed it out and put it in drive and I noticed that I didn't feel it go into drive. I hit the gas and nothing... I put it 1st and still nothing. It would move but it was acting like it was it was stuck in 4th. I purged the torque converter and all the fluid 3 times and the filter thinking that the fluid I put in it(Mobil1) was the cause, but no luck. Reverse is just fine but the forward drive gears are screwed. So I had to take it down to San Diego to Ron Baker Chevrolet(Where I bought it) and have them fix it. My brother is the general sales Manager there(he basically runs the dealership) and he said that he would take care of it. The local dealership would not fix it under the modified warranty from GM since it was Demo truck for the dealership because it was the forst truck they installed a lift kit on. The truck had 1700 miles on it when I bought it and GM modified the warranty for me but the local dealership said that it was a fake contract that I had manufactured and tried to take it from me. The owner of Ron Baker said to bring to him and and he will have it fixed top priority. Quote
Shee-Male Posted July 9, 2006 Report Posted July 9, 2006 Weird to say the least, prolly sumthin simple, those trannys have been around for alot of years in alot of trucks, just wait and see what they tell ya, and let us know. I wonder if it has something to do with purging the fluid out of the converter?, why put mobil 1 in it? Quote
slowpokebanshee Posted July 9, 2006 Report Posted July 9, 2006 any chance that taking the pan off the tranny you might have "forced" it going back on or off, to get around the cross member etc.? I have seen a few do it your selfers do this and break one of the shift solenoids, and cause this concern.....also when you replaced the filter there are two different ones, one for a deep pan and one for shallow. ..... Animalman294 Posted July 9, 2006 Report Posted July 9, 2006 I know exactly whats wrong with it, it has Chevy stamped on the front of it :yelrotflmao: . Just kidin', hey did you so anything to the valve body because as stated above if one of the solenoids was damaged or if it was messed with something may not be put back together right and isn't building enough line pressure. Auto's are tempermental as all Fu@@!*?. Sounds like your local stealer was an a$$, and I wouldn't be givin' them any business in the future. Good luck man................ Quote

sweetquads Posted July 9, 2006 Report Posted July 9, 2006 I am sure you knew what you were doing but even experts screw up sometimes. Seems a little to coincidental that it blew right after you serviced it. Quote
Handyman Posted July 9, 2006 Author Report Posted July 9, 2006 Whne I removed the Pan I saw that the clearance betweent the pan and the exaust crossover from the driver side was going to be real tight. I had my wife pry on it(not touching the pan) just enough for me to slide the pan out with no problems. There were electrical connections at the rear of the pan that I looked at real closely and I didn't see that it was loose. I may have knocked someting loose when I touched them to make sure they weren't loose but I would think that I see that before I out the pan on. From what I understand the 4L60E transmissions are actual car transmissions that come from the camaro and impala SS and not truck transmissions, I could be wrong though. Quote
thegroup Posted July 9, 2006 Report Posted July 9, 2006 thats fucked up. the one in my '94 Z-28 didnt blew out till it had like 150,000 miles on it :ermm: Quote

I agree, doesn't sound like you blew the tranny. Either electrical problem or broken shift solenoid. Is your check engine light on??? If I remember right those default to 3rd gear if there is any kind of tranny code. If it did, it will feel like it's slipping but it's just trying to take off in 3rd gear. Quote

The OBD light came on but only after about 10 minutes after te truck was running in the drive way. I had to winch the truck on to the trailer because I couldn't get it on the trailer under it's own power. Either way it will be looked at and from the way my Brother was talking he was going to have the tranny swapped out since it has had problem before right after I bought it. Quote
BenBB Posted July 10, 2006 Report Posted July 10, 2006 (edited) thats fucked up. the one in my '94 Z-28 didnt blew out till it had like 150,000 miles on it :ermm: Oh great my '01 Silverado just turned 155,000 :baseball_getlost: ...my work truck is a '00 Z71 with almost 260,000 and we haven't been in the tranny at all... On a side note, they FINALLY put a damn drain plug in the tranny pan, woofuckinghooo!! Edited July 10, 2006 by BenBB Quote
slowpokebanshee Posted July 11, 2006 Report Posted July 11, 2006 finally added a drain plug....and then they took it away....same with the rear diff, had a drain plug for a few years, and I think '03 stopped...no more fuel filters either ('cept Dura max) in 05 and up silverados....and those neat cabin/A/C filters? they are gone starting in 03' , how about if your remote is dead and you want to unlock the passenger door from the out side? can't they took away the lock cylinder too. and what if you break down at night and pop the hood to scratch your head....no under hood light any more...... funny thing thay are taking away more and more features, and they keep getting more expensive.and less reliable? just rantin' Quote
Hilarious Posted July 11, 2006 Report Posted July 11, 2006 funny thing thay are taking away more and more features, and they keep getting more expensive.and less reliable? just rantin' Couldnt be any further from the truth. And they keep getting more and more plastic parts on them also. I have owned my last GM product. Hope your dealer fixes your shit. I started out with a 00' GMC sierra with 4.8 and that was the biggest piece of shit I have ever driven. Put 9000 miles on it driving back and forth to the dealer to have it worked on. lol. Im still on my second one, this one has the 5.3. Its been pretty good with 110k. You all that have '99 and up, do your trucks leak tranny fluid from the rear seal only when the truck is in motion? Good luck with yours, handyman. Quote
PLAYRR2000 Posted July 11, 2006 Report Posted July 11, 2006 (edited) I have seen dozens of tranny's foul up just after "service". I drove my 97 Expedition 4X4 238,000 miles on the stock tranny fluid, and never had an issue. I haven't had an automatic tranny "serviced" since. Sometimes I think it's just a ploy to keep tranny shops in business. I hope it's a quick fix for you. Brandon Edited July 11, 2006 by PLAYRR2000 Quote

I dont sell new car's anymore because you can't make any money selling those but i sell cars (and trucks and suvs) that are priced between 12-25,000 dollars. Give you a tip on the servicing (sp?) the transmissions. You do want to service them. You want to do it every 30-40,000 miles but you SHOULD NOT service them if they have never been serviced, thats just one of those things. They will not last as long if you never service them but if you dont service them and them all the sudden you do, well, you can bet that the trans is probably gunna go out. Had a buch of mechanics tell me that something to do with the old fluid is sticky and ya get the new stuff in there and it just all comes apart ( not litterally but you know what i mean) Quote
