80overShee Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 Ok guys, I'm kinda light on the budget for this spring to be dumping it into the quad but I need some advice on what I should throw at it. I am running an 87 with a .080 over bore with a minor 'clean up port job' basically its just polished up in the intake a little. - .080 over fresh build (Wiseco - prolites and new rods) - minor clean up ort work - stock carbs - Boyesen reeds - stock cages - T5's w/ custom silencer (CBR 1000RR can=bad ass) - stock head - modified shift star - +4 timing on modified stock plate - trued/welded crank - K&N clamp-on filters - Vito's jet kit (repackaged dynojet) I have about $500-$600 to throw at it before summer maybe a little more if its something that would be worth my budgetting everything else on, what should I go with? I'm also tryin to rebuild my rocket so I'm throwing money everywhere right now. I would LOVE to have a +4 stroker but I can't afford to get it ported at the same time to match the crank. I would also love to have it ported but I want to go with a stroker later on. Is there any way of getting around this? Should I just go with new VF3 reeds, carbs and possibly head (or modify stock) until I can afford to do the full top end correctly? I hate that every setup uses different components (28pwks for mostly stock or 33pwks for ported...etc) What is my best bet? Thanks Quote

gipperz Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 Best bang for your buck is really a professional port job. I chose Jeff at F.A.S.T. due to his positive feedbacks and competative pricing. You could get the flywheel lightened.Mill the head. Besides, those t-5's will really wake up with the porting. Give Jeff a hollar, he goes by fastoys on here. He'll tell you the best way to spend your cash and get the most out of it. Quote
80overShee Posted March 31, 2006 Author Report Posted March 31, 2006 For port work, judging by everyones comments in here it is going to be through Jeff at FAST or Jim at passion. If I want to go with stroker later on will am I going to have port again? The 'sailing' comment was funny, I had a feeling that was coming. Haha...to anyone that saw the "xbox wanted - best mom ever" in the pics section....maybe I can get my girl to give up her "ass cherry" so I can have a full +4 stroker 12-port Passion setup.....yep, she'd leave me for asking. locogato11283 Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 i think id just hold off until you can do a bunch of stuff at one time. do u think its gonna be worth porting cylinders that are already 80 over?? Quote
80overShee Posted April 1, 2006 Author Report Posted April 1, 2006 I can resleeve later on and have it matched up cant I? Not sure if thats something I could do myself (sleeve port matching). I can do the resleeve though. Quote

80overShee Posted April 1, 2006 Author Report Posted April 1, 2006 So a head and reeds are my best bet then for useable modifications later on then? Quote
Leadfoot350 Posted April 1, 2006 Report Posted April 1, 2006 if you get a head the domes you run with your 350 will not work with your +4 stroker so just get the reeds and lighten your flywheel. Quote
Wallrat Posted April 1, 2006 Report Posted April 1, 2006 Did you say your intakes are polished? Grab some sandpaper and scuff those back up. Exhausts are supposed to be polished, intakes should be rough to help keep the mixture mixed and not get fuel condensation on the walls. Quote
80overShee Posted April 1, 2006 Author Report Posted April 1, 2006 They aren't "polished" they are just opened up. It looks like someone did very light port work on them. My "builder" (discount parts guy & guru) said it was a "clean up port". Not enough to really make a huge difference in any part of the powerband but shouldn't hurt anything either. Bascially they are stock.....probably some bonehead with a dremel and a spare 20 minutes while doing the top end before I bought it. I am going to do the reeds and the flywheel thing. Forgot all about the flywheel. I bought an extra over the winter for that very purpose.......duh. Quote
Machwon Posted April 1, 2006 Report Posted April 1, 2006 (edited) Get a set of V-force reeds and send it to me for a reasaonably priced dune port. I'm probably only a 1/2 hour from swartz creek. Edited April 1, 2006 by Machwon Quote
Polish Posted April 1, 2006 Report Posted April 1, 2006 Every body seams to be motor, motor , motor................Id say get some good suspension.............your bike will handle and perform a lot better Quote
Wallrat Posted April 1, 2006 Report Posted April 1, 2006 (edited) I agree that suspension is a way better mod than anything he could do to the engine, but for $500-$600 you aren't gonna really do much suspension-wise. At most he could run some yfz fronts, which IMO is still a shitty setup. Plus its an 87 so he can't just buy some ebay arms. You could convert it to a-arms for prolly 2-300, either by buying a frame and selling your j-arm one or doing a conversion. Wouldn't do much for you now but later on if you wanted to get some new arms then at least that part of it would be out of the way. Edited April 1, 2006 by Wallrat Quote
lowriderb Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 you could, look into picking up a used aftermarket head ($120), port the stock reed cages and get some tdr reeds ($30), and possibly save the rest to either get a better set of stock jugs to have ported for the 4mm and domes cut for the same as well that will drop right into the head (the domes for the 350 can be cut to run with the 4mm motor.). 4mm crank (450?) port work in the 450-600+ range, domes cut around 40-70 bucks. the suspension is up to you depending on what your doing with the bike..
