Compression testing Hot engine vs. Cold engine. Which is correct? 2. The lowest reading you should allow until rebuilt on STOCK motor. 3. will plug color change when a top end rebuild is needed? Like the plug will look as if the jetting is richer than normal....anything like that. banshee tuner Posted January 4, 2006 Report Share Posted January 4, 2006 I have always been told cold cranking compression is the correct reading. A banshee will run with about 100 psi compression and if your cylinders read more than 10 psi difference rebuild. I don't beleive the plug color will change from a fresh topend to a worn out one. FIRST BANSHEE Posted January 5, 2006 Report Share Posted January 5, 2006 on real weak cylinders your plugs will look rich, testing cold will read a little lower than hot. you what your cylinders to be within a few pounds of each other. RBD Posted January 6, 2006 Report Share Posted January 6, 2006 You need to know how to us a compression measurement and be using a VERY good gauge that will repeat year after year. Know what the reading are when it's running good and what the readings are when it runs poor. A compression gauge is only as good as it is, and what you have experience with these readings.
