tschoeberl Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 I sort of have a problem here and need alittle help on this. I am trying to get my axle nuts off of my axle and they will not budge. What do I have to do to get them off? I tried using a pipe wrench on it with no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Banshee 79 Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 I Would Try Some Penetrant Oil Like WD-40 And let it soak for about 15 minutes. Then Tap Your Pipe Wrench With A hammer. Be Careful Not To Damage The Nuts With Your Pipe Wrench. Hope This Helps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
J.J. Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 From the factory the nuts are tightened to 170ft.lb with Loctite. I had to hold the inner nut stationary with a wrench and turn the outer nut with another to get it to move. Can't recall the correct size wrench (I'm at work right now), but you need a proper wrench, pipe tools are just gonna phuk things up. Quote
05Special Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 hahaha im a plumber so im aware of the pipe wrench situation, ive actually been having problems keeping them on!!!! i used pipe dope around the threads, it dries and and becomes hard but with a few taps it pops right off, they make a pipe wrench with no teeth that are used for sloan valves, im gonna do a search and see where you can get one, im not sure if you want to buy one but i use the dam thing all the time, and not only for work, i'll brb with the site.... 05Special Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 http://www.coastaltool.com/cgi-bin/SoftCar....htm?E+coastest thats a page the wrench is on, don't have to worry about gouging up any with that kind of wrench, its actually called a spud wrench, if you were to buy one you'd be glad you did, my $0.02 Quote
tschoeberl Posted February 25, 2005 Author Report Posted February 25, 2005 I put some WD-40 on last night and will give is another shot tonight. I like the "spud" wrench and will check Home Depot or Lowes to see if they have it. If not, where should I check? Quote
Skyy Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 If wd-40 doesnt work there is better stuff out there. I really like Zep 45, works really good for me http://www.zep.com/ProductCatalog/ProductB...&subSection=977 Quote
boonman Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 I have had to break out the hot wrench, (torches) to heat them p on ocasion, but usually, the 24" crescent wrench (metric crescent wrench of course..) works like a champ. Quote
. Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Put it in gear, have someone hold the wheels and give the pipe wrench a couple good stomps and hopefully it'll break loose. And I'm a Fan of PB blaster myself.....zep 45 is my backup Quote
05Special Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 actually no you really can't stomp it, that would be tightening it as there is no way to push down to tighten because a pipe wrench would be hitting your rear shock, you'll never get a wrench in there, by yourself a rigid crescent wrench(gauranteed for life) and put a piece of pipe on that sob, it'll come off.... tschoeberl Posted February 27, 2005 Author Report Posted February 27, 2005 Well I beat myself up, along with the nuts, and they are off. Now I can't get the sprocket hub off to pull the axle through. Any suggestions? Quote
badcompany Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 We had that same problem. We tried using a press and it started bending the ears of the sprocket hub out. We had to put the heat to it and still use the torch. Quote

Any suggestions? Not shure but when you get it out, If you do . I would put some Loctite antiseize in there so that it doesnt happen again. Quote
blk02banshee Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 You need to tap on it all the way around and then warm it up with a propane torch (WARM not hot, and only down near the axle.) If you get it hot it will weaken it, so just warm it a little. Then, while it's warm, drop some light oil or spray some PB blaster/WD-40, etc in the spline area. It will also help if the quad is on it's side, so that gravity helps the oil seep into the splines. Quote
