Has anyone ever seen this crap happen, what a pain in the asssssssss!

It sheared off like a donut while riding.  Only took 3 hours and 2 pullers!!

Happened on my old YZ 250. Dunno if it's a yamaha thing or? Scared the crap out of me, I had just built top & bottom ends!Couldn't find any reason for it, all was snugged down just right and etc.....

When that was lightened, was any material taken off the face where it broke? I see the correct pullers in the background , was there another type used in the removal?

If, even once it was pulled with a jaw type puller, it can weaken the metal right where that flywheel broke.

Could this have been the reason?

From what I can see in the picture, it looks like it broke very even and concentric. I would have to say that it was face cut when it was lightened and broke where the machining cut ended.

Yup, looking at the pic, it looks as if it broke right at the point where the center hub ends on the face of the flywheel. It also looks as if material was taken off the face. That looks pretty thin in that area. Also, like BD mentioned, just attempting to remove the flywheel with a jaw style puller can weaken the flywheel. And that is where it will do it. It also looks like not alot of material was removed from the outer diameter of that wheel.

Yeah, I had it lightened and it looks like they did take it from that face so that's probably what happened. No i've never used the wrong puller so it probably was lightened too thin or something. Oh well, shit happens.

I have heard of several that broke just like your because the took material off the face if you have one lightened make sure they just do the sides.

I'm still trying to decide if I'm gonna lighten the next one or not. I would hate to be down in a hole in the sand dunes up in Walden, CO and that thing shear off again.

It is a very reliable mod if the weight is taken off the sides. How much do you weigh? If you are under 200 I would do it. If you are over I wouldn't the motor need the weight of the flywheel if you are heavier.

Actually I'm right at 200 so it's probably a toss up...

My Ricky Stator flywheel (I had lightened) did something similar to that but it was in the cylindrical portion of the wheel near the magnets not the hub. Really sucks when it happens. I was riding a nice wheelie and all of a sudden no power. Dropped the front end down and rolled to a stop thinking

Why would you not recommend it if you are over 200 #'s??? I am 230, I have mine lightened, and I love it. A banshee has a power stroke every 180 degrees of crankshaft rotation. Not like a single cylinder bike, or a 4 stroke. Anyone that downplays lightening a flywheel on a banshee either has never tried it, and likes to theorize about something they know nothing about, and/or have NEVER tried it. A banshee is a totally different animal when it comes to flywheel mass.
