yamabond or RTV?

I use threebond 1104 or 1211. I forget the new number off hand for the 1104.

I was told that permatex makes yamabond but not sure if that is correct. You can get the black high temp permatex at any auto parts store. I have used the permatex and had good luck with it.

I've used it to put cases together. I didn't like the yamabond b/c how stringy it is. I prefer the RTV and haven't had any problems with it. Someone else might have some more insight though....jmo

Permatex makes some new stuff I just got at the local Parts Unlimited Dealer. Its called Moto Seal, just like the Yamabond. $4.50 a tube.

Yea there is no way I would use rtv or high temp sealer on cases. Gasoline will brake it down. Take a dried pice of rtv sealer and put it in a little gasoline. See how long it takes to break down.

 

Yamaha bond, three bond, moto seal are designed to be used on engine cases. It holds up to fuel way better. It is made thin and stringing for a reason. There will be to much clearance between the engine cases and crank bearings using rtv. The engine cases need a thin sealer so they stay with in spec.

This is 100% correct, the hydrocarbons in gasoline breakdown the RTV silicone sealant. Depending on how good your cases fit(how flat) determines how long tghe RTV will last. On my Banshees I have always used Yamabond, but on other bikes and quads I have used Permatex#2 and threebond(seperately) with no problems.

A buddy of mine used high temp silicon based sealant and the structure of the sealant was broken down within just a few days. We weren't sure if this was due to the gasoline of the vibration. In any case it was a very costly mistake for him.

I have seen several failures where people have used RTV on their cases, leak down tests are standard before any teardowns in my shop and I've yet to see a set of RTV cases that were sealed when they came to me. I use threebond 1194 which is the replacement for the 1104, it runs about $10 per tube...pretty cheap insurance if you ask me.

it always amazes me that people will drop $300+ on a rebuild but wanna save $5 on a tube of sealant when it could cost them another $300+....

i just had an engine go through my hands that an engine and chassis builder from ohio who is on planet sand(he's the best according to himself) had assembled.it looked like he used fingernail polish to seal the cases together.spend the money and buy the right sealer-hondabond-yamabond-1104-they are all the same and made for the job.
