Proud Banshee Owner Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 I was riding some trails and a few high speed tracks when my motor just seized up. I noticed that my overflow from my radiator was spitting steam and my head (which was powdercoated silver) is now gold and the high temp paint I had on the cylinders peeled off. I showed my mechanic and he said my water pump went out that is what burned up all of the oil and locked up my motor. I added oil and now I can kick it over, but there is NO compression in right cylinder and very little in left. He said I need a new top end without a doubt, but not sure on the bottom end because he didnt open it up yet. He offered to sell me his 4mm stroker crank and dune port my motor for 1800. I dont know much about interior motor work for two strokes. Just the basics. Im wondering if that is a good deal, do I need it or just repair to stock bore and stroke for 800. Most of my riding is at GLAMIS, CA but I also want to beat my buddys Raptor 700 too. I have, Toomey T6, Boost Bottle, V Force reeds, 1/4 inch spacers, +4 advance timing, lightened flywheel, sprocket teeth set up for acceleration, jetted stock carbs, K&N individual intake filters and milled head. Thank you in advance. How reliable is this set up, and how much power increase am I looking at? Quote
Wiz Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 1800 seems awfully high on that price...lol is that him tearing motor down installing everything and putting motor back together? consider you can get a 4mm crank for around $500 and porting for around that too that leaves you with 800 bucks on his bid..... Also if you motor got that hot you might be lookng at some other problems, not including a new top end and water pump (if that was your problem).... I would have like to have shot that with my infa-red thermometer when she went bet it was hot...lol Quote
NitroTate Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 First off, if you have any mechanical ability whatsoever don't agree to that deal yet. What you should do first is get that motor apart and see if the crank is damaged or not and then decide if you want to move up to a 4mill. The guys on this forum including myself have a lot of experience with banshees and can help you all the way through the process. If you want more help from me just pm me or just keep posting here. You can do most of the rebuild by yourself and save a TON of money. Quote
arfountain Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 That's sounds expensive when I could sell you a complete 4 mil motor for that much ready to go. Just bolt it in and go. Quote
Proud Banshee Owner Posted December 4, 2008 Author Report Posted December 4, 2008 Yeah, I do have some ability, I did do a complete tear down and rebuild when I powder coated my frame, so iI know my bike. Im just worried if I dont notice something or miss checking it out. i will post pics of my poor motor asap. I will greatly appreciate all of your help through this whole process. And I dont plan on doing anything till after that holidays you know, lol. Any other advice will be great. Thanks Quote
fastrthnu Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 just buy a motor off ebay with good compression, sell what good parts you have left and call it a day. Quote
Handyman Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 It's completely up to you but since you'll be i thgat deep in the motor I'd throw in a 4mil crank...You's feel a hell of a difference and wil love it, but that is 100% up to you. I'd look to see closely at everything, even the stuff you wouldn't normally look at...My '99 had a firing issue and come to find out the needle was bent on the very tip causing disruption in the carbs screwing everything up..Anything that you may have a question on please feel free to ask...I've never been on or heard of a forum with this many people who work on their own motors and can diagnose anything with these bikes....We'll get you up and running....and it'll be free... Oh and throw that boost bottle away.... Good luck. Quote
Proud Banshee Owner Posted December 4, 2008 Author Report Posted December 4, 2008 LOL I heard about that problem, the boost bottle. It was cheap and I really didnt notice a difference in power, good or bad. lol Does anybody have pics or descriptions of what I will be looking for once I open the case? Good or bad? Quote

We can all help once you get it apart but post some pics of it too. There are plenty of specs to check etc. etc. but we'll help you when you get to that point. Quote
Proud Banshee Owner Posted December 4, 2008 Author Report Posted December 4, 2008 Perfect, ill try to take care of that today. Thanks for the help guys. Quote

If so, I could not agree with toasting the case oil from over heat. I too highly suspected the water pump from your description. 1800 is an ankle grab without lube. If I understand you right, a used 4mm crank and a dune port for that? Depending on how bad it popped, you may have made a mess in there and you may just need a top end. If you have what we call "gray matter" in the engine. It HAS to come apart and be cleaned. If you find silver specs on the crank and such, split it. You may only need to clean the crank up. Hard telling but I have caught plenty that seemed locked only until we got the crank out and it was just piston frags binding it. That is not typical though. Proud Banshee Owner Posted December 6, 2008 Author Report Posted December 6, 2008 Well, I opened up the motor and this is what I found. I have a hole in the piston lol. The head has chunks of metal fused with it also. I took the cylinders off and I can see some shavings of the piston down in the crankshaft area. I see that I will need a new top end, but can i just clean out the bottom end or will I need to replace too. Lemme know what you guys think, thanks in advance. -Ray Quote
NitroTate Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 I'd split the case if I were you. I've seen people take the chance and try to clean it out without splitting but you risk more costly damage. Not to mention it's really easy and there's really noting to the inside of a banshee case. If you have the money get yourself a new seal kit, they're only about $45. or so and worth it. Quote
