This may not be the right forum, but we will see if I can get a response.

Sometimes when I land a jump awkward, not necessarily big, I just have a bad landing, I land on the very front of my foot and over extend it.

The tendon / muscles in the back of my ankle screech in pain and I am hurting for weeks.

I have only done this twice now, but im afraid if it keeps happening I may cause permanent damage.

The boots I wear are old, may 5 - 8 years. Are they flexing to much? Should I get a new tech pair of boots?

What do you guys think?

Sounds like a bad habit you need to break, I keep my arch/heel "pegged".

try some alpinestar tech 3's. i have them. there all around good boots but the buckles are a p.i.t.a to snap in and out after a while.

Have you guys heard anything good about the alpinestar tech 7's?

Sounds like a riding postion problem to me. Are you letting your feet come off the pegs when you jump? If so that is your problem. Also do you ride on your toes, your heels, or the arch of your foot?

+1.

I wear Nikes Court Force 90s shoes, and I have been riding for years and never been injured (just burned, cut, etc.)

Safe? Not at all.

But I'm just proving a point....if I can jump stuff and be fine with Nikes, and your boots are giving your problems, something is wrong here.

Well that's the problem, sometimes it just doesn't work as planned. Its only happened twice, in 4 months and riding twice a week. So it doesn't happen often, I am just wondering if a better / newer boot may help in the occasion it happens again.

I move my foot position quite a bit while riding, but a majority of the time the peg is in the arch.

The last time it happened, like 3 days ago, my feet came off the pegs, just like you said. I landed hard, and hurt my ankle. You don't think better boots may help at least?

A good set of boots will help a little but it still is going to come down to your riding postion. Grip that seat tight when you go and jump. Mostly practice jumping, that is the only way your really going to keep from getting hurt. What is your riding postion going into the face of the jump? That will really effect the way your jumping and landing. Do you have a video camera? If so get someone to tape you while you jump. Is it the same jump thats giving you problems?

What I would do... Is go to the store.. See whats on sale...Duct tape, rope etc etc.. You have to have a 2nd person to do this...Sit on the quad place your feet where you think is good...Now take either the duct tape or rope and have your friend tie your feet to the pegs.. Problemooooo solved!! no more slipping and no more hurting your self.

No, its not the same jump, now that I think about it, its the jumps that are hard to hit, they have horrible take off's and landings.

I have never had it happen to me on a smooth jump. Guess I will have to watch what i hit when im on the move lol

BTW, I appreciate all the responses. Its for my CR250, not my banshee : )

I've done the same thing as you have done on the jumps...It's not the boots it's the placement of your feet. I have a pair of FOX proforma boots that are just about broken in and I fucked up my ankles too landing with the balls of my feet on the pegs on big jumps... I got some "in-boot" ankle supports/braces to wear when I ride on the track. I am an avid mountain biker and place the balls of my feet on the pedals and had a bad habit of placing the pegs there as well... It's habit I had break before I broke my ankles.

On bikes I've found that landing a little more front down makes the landings a lot smoother. Is it that the jumps are kicking you up when you get to the top of the jump? I think you just need to practice. Go hit the jumps that you know give you a problem and just start hitting them again and again.
