Red is right on...6th gear requires more fuel than 3rd or 4th....the more of a load, the more fuel it takes....Just like a car.....great fuel mileage at 60mph, but it goes downhill the faster you go....the wind resistance causes more of a load....

I wouldn't buy any slides, its common for them to lose that black tephlon after a year...I wouldn't worry about minor scratches either...If your going to spend that much, then I'd buy a new set of carbs for that price on ebay....

I always have to jet higher for the twin k&n's....Paul Turner suggest to leave the box on for tract length...Toomey suggest they have the perfect tract length and better velocity, but from dyno testing, they are both full of shit...I haven't seen one bit of difference w/ or w/o the box.....So if you want the absolute most hp and torque, get the twin pods, if you ride in mud or water, then run the box w/ a cut lid...

Try to get some temps off the cylinders. I know the coolant will affect it some, but you should still see a difference if there is one.

Make sure both plugs read the same or you have an air leak somewhere.....Jet it up, a popping sound is from a lean condition, wot indicates its your main jets...Go up 3-4 sizes and go from there. Elevation in Maine can vary from sea level at the ocean to over 5000' at Mount Washington....

Banchetta, your gearing is very close to mine, just a tad higher. Your saying if I switched to a smaller front and smaller rear, a new chain would stretch a lot faster? Never really thought of that, something to think about. I'm forever screwing with my gearing, trying to find the perfect setup. I used to run a 16/42 gear and worked great, I seen the Honda hub for my durablue axle and decided to try it...Lost 1lbs off the axle and am able to run down to a 35 rear sprocket.....sounded great at first especially for ground clearence, less chain, smaller sprockets, less weight,,,,etc....always looking for the edge... Anyways, now my chain stretches like hell.....went from the 14/37 gear to a 15/39, still stretches, but not as bad, now w/ the stroker and some added mods, I'll be trying the 16/39 gear and see how that pulls...I want to go back to the 16 tooth.....

Light brown doesn't mean that your rich. You want a dark brown color...Tan or white straps indicate that your way too lean...Light brown means your lean but close...Put the air box back on and take the lid off. Holes in the box will just throw sand and mud onto the filter....If you ride in mud a lot, then cut the last 1.5" off the end of the lid so you still have all 4 clips...this will give you plenty of air, now you'll want to go up at least 3-4 jet sizes from where you are now and run it wide open in 6th gear, shut it off, pull the clutch in, coast to a stop...pull the plugs and read them again....

I have one and would do it again in a heart beat........especially for dunes!!!! It just pulls hard as hard....

For foam filters I just use 50w motor oil and apply it by putting some in your hands and wiping the filter down w/ your hands. You don't need a lot, just a light coating to catch fine dust....I'd still oil even w/ an outerware.....As for K&N filters I use the K&N oil...

smaller sprockets will make your chain stretch faster. I put the Honda hub on the rear axle and put a 14/37 gear on, now my chain stretches a lot...

You have a problem....first a few questions, did those speckles on the plugs look like aluminum?? Next, what is your compression? Check that out asap!! If your compression is fine, then I'd do a leakdown test to see if you have a blown crankseal. That'll cause your lean condition, the sudden change in jetting for no reason, and loss of power..... I'd first check the compression and rebuild if necessary, before you take anything apart, I'd make a leakdown tester, there is some great info on duncanracing.com on how to make one. That'll determine whether you have to pull the crank seals to replace them....you have some homework to do now, let us know what you come up w/..

From all my experience on the dyno and field testing, there is no such thing as a larger carb being better for top and smaller carbs are better for bottom...The larger or smaller carb will give you gains throughout the curve or lose gains throughout, I haven't seen anything else. I've tried this on a stock port and ported, stroker........I couldn't find a carb to work as well as stock for the stock porting, it seemed that if I went larger, I lost hp across the whole curve even on ported stock carbs...I thought about putting smaller than stock carbs on and honestly think there would be a gain, maybe thats where the 2into1 setup in coming into play...They might flow less air, increasing velocity and giving a better air/fuel consistency.... As for my stroker though, the opposite happens, the larger the carbs, the more power across the whole curve. I wouldn't suggest a 2 into 1 for a stroker, they just breathe so much more.....

Disconnect the parking brake switch and the tors module above the left exhaust. It has a 3-wire plug....

This sounds pretty good so far, maybe us Maine guys can leave in the morning and meet up w/ the Mass. guys at Walters house......I know it'll take John about the same time to get to Walters as well for me and he lives in Cape Cod......We can all meet up at Walters in Conn. around 11:00am and all leave from there if Walter doesn't mind....I'll pm him..
-
By doing that, do you risk welding the clutch ball to the rod? Why? Your not slipping the clutch like on take off, your only pulling the clutch in and shutting it down....
-
Could be both, but low end power and gearing is two different things...Try a 14 tooth and go from there. ONly cost $10 to try...Those tires are pretty big for that gearing..
-
Jon, that sounds like a good time to leave, I figure about 7-8 hours roughly...We can hook up somewhere and ride down together....What time are you leaving Jimmy?? Maybe we can all coordinate a time and place....What about you JKJK?? Walter? I'll pm 99nhbanshee also..

warmer weather will always cause a little more hesitation due to less density in the air = to less hp and cooling efficientcy which will heat up the intake air even more.....Anyways.....you might want to turn out the air screws a little to lean out the pilot some more for the warmer air......
-
I agree, 185's are too big... I run 158 mains w/ 35mm pwks w/ a stroker motor....READ your plugs,,,you can be wayy to rich as well as too lean....YOUR PLUGS WILL TELL ALL........

Get rid of the 30 pilot and try the stock pilot

Powerband Doesnt Seem Right

Jetting can be fustrating, but if you don't do it, then you'll never get the optimum power and response,,,,I'd try lowering the pilots first and tune them in, then try raising the needles...Spend the time...

Jon, come on down and bring everyone, this is a shee forum, but its all about the sport......I'm still going, if you want to ride down together, then let me know, I want to take a Mobile home down there for the family....This will be awesome, you won't want to miss it...
