In my opinion try the following. Doing this will help eliminate and narow down your problem. Carbs slides in sync? (Move out idle screws all the way first), sync the cabels then Sync the slides through the idle screw. then turn air screws all the way in and see if any better. If yes and bog is gone you have thre right pilot jet. If no then go to a bigger pilot and repeat the above. Chris

Clutch cables seem to stiffen up fairly quickly. Lubing may work for a few weeks but that is about it. For $10. it is easier to buy a new one every year. Chris

Got A Question For Passion, patriot, mpracing Or Equ
Yaxy replied to Nightrider's topic in Banshee Repairs and Mods
Are Banshee cranks really that bad? I hear allot of stories about cranks and rods going but have never had a issue with my 89 banshee which has probably 25,000 miles on it of fast roads some MX use and tight trails. I have never had a crank issue and went 10 years before taking the crank cases apart and at that point for proventive maintenace had the 2 outer crank bearings replaced and the crank trued. The shop here in Utica NY who does only R&D and building 2 stroke motors for 30 years said that the crank was fine, no major issues to worry about. The banshee has been in full mod status for 8 years now, changing pistons every 6 years rings every 2 and I see virtually no piston or cylinder wear. This tell me that the shaft is working fine. I want to buy a new banshee but all these crank stories make me wonder if quality in Yamaha parts are that much different then they were in 1989. I am a true 2 stroke fan and take good care of my stuff but do not want to put all kinds of money into a new machine and motor and after a few years it is junk. Chris -
I have only had expereince with the Mikuni's and I do like them. One of the biggest benefits in my opinion is cost. I paid $190 for 2 new 28 flatslides where I think the Keihns are in the $300 range. I have never seen the way a keihn is built but I have heard the Mikun's have a bit more adjustement via the needle jet. But for most people this is left alone anyway. Chris

Over on bluetraxx.com they started a yealy get together on tug hill. It will, probably be in June or July. But hey I'm up there a few times a month so it doesn't matter to me. PS; Who plans on goint to coalfest? I think we are going but may take a trip down early to see how it is. It will be crazy and hard to ride with 200 people in a sand pit and that may be teh only reason why we may not go but we will see. Chris

Up in your neck of the woods I ride on Tug Hill, in Brantingham, Watson and Harrisville. I live around 30 minutes south of the HIll so up there is like my second home. Also ride down here near Remsen, Hinckley area and Johsnstown near Saratoga, at least in that general direction. Joined trail pass and some of the larger riding areas are near Saratoga and ALtmar which is off Rt 81 near Oswego. Will spend some time this year in PA, Coal Fest and Paragon Park near Hazelton. You should not have to rejet after installilng the Dyna. Depending on who programmed your box how the timing is. I run 94 octane and on my Dyna I can use program 2-4. If I use 1 I would have to run 100 + octane. Now, my first Dyna went bad after a few months so It was replaced under warranty. You may want to send the box back to where you bought it. If I do remember the Dyna's have a 1 year warranty. Chris

Walrat. I have an 89 banshee that has FMF Gold series torque pipes on it that I bought in 1990. In 1998 I put a new A-arm Yamaha frame on it ands the pipes fit fine. These are the same as the fatties of today. In fact evrything from the origianl 89 fits on the new chasis just got to get new arms Chris

This is going to be confusing so bare withme on this. I have an 89 banshee and have gone through 3 CDI's since 1990. Let me tell you they are one big pain in the but, and the results of a box malfuncitioning are wide spread. my 1st box, bike was idling at warm up and then just died no spark, Ok I had an extra 89 at the time so that was easy to figure out. Please note jetting has been the same for 5 + years so I automatically rule it out when there is inconsistancies in performance 2nd box, (Yamaha brand box) If temp was under 70 degrees no issues. IF above 70 the bike wuold run great for about 20 minuts then start to break up bad before the powerband. Let bike cool for a few hours start agains and same thing, 20 minutes then run like crap. Now if under 70, ride all day no issues ran perfect. 3rd box, ran a Dyna for 3 months had similiar issues to box 2 to happend all the time though, break up Covered under warranty. 4th DYna 1 year old and still working fine. Bottom line. IF you are sure your jetting is right and are confident in your abilities to tune, any issues in my opinions and experiences are related to the CDI. Chris

Cool head; Watson is awesome. A matter of fact most people may not realize this but from Utica North there is a lot of sand. There are several nice pits owned by Hanson here in Herkimer/Oneida county that are not legal but are nice and al alot of folks ride them, easily spend a hole day in these places. I sent you a Pm a keep me posted. Chris

Have used Bel Ray Gear saver Transmission for 10 years. I get 7 years out of a clutch. and I ride 2000 to 3000 miles per year. Chris

We went there a few yers ago and it was a very rocky place. We took one of the easiet trails and is was mostly baseball to softball size rocks. I have full skids on my banshee and I though I was rock surfing. It is mostly 1st -3rd gear riding. I did however meet some nice folks from West Virginia and Virgina but to travel another 11 hours to get there. nope. All in all it is great that the state of West Virginia has established a trail system, unfortunately I do not feel it was made for sport quads Chris

Actually any weekend is good for me and I am sure this will come up more in the next couple of months as the time progresses. Looking forward to meeting ya all! Chris

Meat thanks for the post. While talking to another HQ member that sounds like a awesome place (Strippins) to ride. I am pushing for Memorial day weekend. This would give most of us an extra day to travel, approximqtely 4 hours for me in central NY. Plus I heard that the holidays are wild there. Chris

Typically 1.00 means 40 over. Lots of room to go. Chris

Through my own experiences sudden peformenace issues are related to the CDI Box. I have gone through 2 stock ones that lasted about 5 years each, 1 Dyna that lasted 2 months and thus far the 2nd Dyna has been ok (1 year). CDI boxes are a pain and all the problems I have had are not sumiliar and very inconsistent. If you think it is fuel related you may have something that got in your fuel lines and clogged up the pilots, thus shee wouldn't start. Chris

I buy mine at Advanced Auto. Any automotive store should have what your looking for. Chris

Lsr A-arm Problems- Wont Fit Right.
Yaxy replied to 01bansheefox's topic in Banshee Repairs and Mods
LSR's used to use ball joints made for Mazda Trucks. Because of the size you needed to reem out the stock holes to match. You can either buy a reemer for $70 or have a shop do it for you. It is relatively easy and takes little time. Chris -
My 89 is due for a new clutch. I replaced the stock fiber plates in 96 and now it is time to replace the Verah's after 7 years of use. My steel plates were already glass beaded once and this time I want new springs, fibers and steel plates. While at the local shop looking a the Parts unlimited book the companies Vesrah, Barnettt did not have a compte kit, which probably doesn't matter since I can order them seperately, but I can save $20.00 or so by buyin a DP. I have never personally heard of them but he was mentioning that the DP brand is used by alot of motocrossers. Has anyone ever used them? and if so are they any good? As long as it lasts me another 7 years I really don't care. The shee has all the goodies so the clutch needs to be dependable. Chris

Coating is supposed to help reduce friction and help prevent siezures. I don't know how it works but many racers swear by coatings hera in NY on there sleds and are used in many racing applications. Leadfoot. my experience with coatings has been nothing but good. I probably put 4000 miles on a set of pistons and about 90 % was still on. The only spots that were a bit worn were on the intake port side becasue of piston slap. Sorry you didn't have good luck. I run this shee at 90 degrees down to 40 and never change the jetting and she runs fine at both temps. Chris

This issue of a turnign ring has been common on Wiseco pistons. I have several friends that only use Wiseco and they always seem to have the same problem (Banshee, 250R) of the pins falling out. This was about 5 years ago and I hope Wiesco has fixed the problem by know but maybe not. I don't think the mixing ratio has anything to do with the pin falling out since they are pressed in. The issue of oil is more towards crank bearign and rod life. I run 40:1 Yamalube R and it worsk great . I get 6 years out of set of piston and I ride about 2000 miles (hard a year) high speads, trails etc. motocross occasionally I have the original crank in my 89 banshee and only replaced the two outer bearigns on the crank because after 11 years I decided to take my cases apart for the first time and changed them and trued the crank. My 89 shee is only 40 over is on its second hone and is within tolerance. I run the bike two years and re-ring twice and then bore and I get very littel if any wear on the pistons and the sleeve. My compression never changes from fresh rebuild to 2 years later. I personally wouldn't run leaner than 50:1 and my bike has proved it works for me. Chris 89 shee, Ohlins all around, FMF Pipes, 28 FS Carbs, V-Force, LSR +1+1, PSI MX port, V-Force and Prodesign everything.

To begin I have never used Wiseco or Vitos. I sware by either stock Yamaha or Pro-x which is a factory replica. They might be a bit heavier than forged but after 4 years on set of pistons I have .003 worth of wear on my pistons and will use them for another 2 years at least. Your right you can drive yourself nuts with all the opinions but I have had friends that use forged, (I won't mention the brand) in which the damn pins in the ring groove like to fall out, rings trun, catch a port and POW!!. I have great success with Pro-X and am very happy with there reliablity and quality and won't change... Also; since you are gettign new Pistons, consider getting them coated, though unnecessary they add extra protection. Typically about 30 bucks a piston. I can give you a number for this Place in NY that did mine (Swain Tech) Chris

Cool, there are alot of Tug Hillers out there. We go up there quite often and as boonman mentioned there are several Blair Morgan's around. I'd say 1 out of every five times I am up there I have issues with people who don't know how to stay right. Typically from what I have seen anytime after 4 pm it just seem like the ATVer's hybernate. This is the best time to go. Alot of places up there and need to do some more time experimenting. Heck I have been going up there for 7 or so years and never really got off the beaten path until this fall, and man is there much more up there then I realized. Ya we need to hook up sometime up there. We typically start going up the beginning to mid May. So let me know so we can hook up. Chris
