Well, it very well could be your stator. But there's only a couple ways to tell, check it with an OHM meter or buy a new stator & try it. An OHM meter would be the cheaper route at 1st. If you don't have one, any parts store oughta be able to hook you up, perhaps your local stealer would be willing to check it for you. I don't know the specs off the top of my head, but your bible(aka clymers manual) has the specs that it should check out to. And if the stator is bad, I would suggest Ricky Stator, mine's lasted longer than the 2 previous OEM stators I had put together. Another thing that may be worth checking is the plug cap connections, may unscrew them, clip the wires back a 1/4-1/2 inch & rescrew them on the assure a good connection.
