I've acquired a couple different sets of bars, some 2-1/2+- knurl c2c, some 4" +-knurl C2C ...are the bars yr. Specific? pre vs post '97ish like hubs, elec. Plugs... ?

It's high , especially since you think that might have been your problem, but you can start there... You'll probably end up with between 3 and 4.
