What type of sand? Hard pack with a little loose stuff on top would make them shine, but if it's just sand with out any hard pack you will need more tire.

Yep. Wire wheel it. Sand the nubs and the tip of the pick up so it's crisp. Spray it down with yellow top WD40 or whatever rust inhibitor you got. Then set the pick up gap to 15 thou and see what happens.

OP, you may need to do a bit of taking apart to get at it. Just drain it down. Pull it apart till you get there. Spray Brake cleaner on everything if you don't have a parts washer. Use a good RTV to re assemble if there aren't any special gaskets.

You mentioned the mechanic said " depending in condition, you need a port and polish". Just wanna tell you that it's time for another mechanic. You could need a bore and hone, but don't let someone force you in to porting your cylinders if you don't want/have to have it done. Also, I'm not really positive you guys have that many folks over there who are qualified to be porting cylinders. There's a reason all the big time racers over there are having engines built here in the states.
