is a rear chain guide necesaary and if so what the hell does it do?

It keeps the chain from rubbin the skid plate if the slack gets to be too much. It also helps the chain from jumping a tooth on the sprocket.

 

I'm guessing this was from your swinger post. It's not necessary, but I prefer to run one, especially if your runnin in the trails or woods. As long as you keep an eye on the chain slack you can probably do without it.

not worth the risk if your chain pops off because you arent running that guard.

I wouldn't run without it either, keeps everything in check.

It keeps the lower chain 'in line' under full power. The top part are under tension while on the throttle, then the lower part is running 'freely' or is slacken. The rear guide, like said guides the chain on the sprocket. You can run without it, but it does have its purpose and maybe insures that the chain won't come off, even if there is almost no change of coming off without it..

If your runnin any kind of power I would highly recomend running one... I pitched my chain off a few times because I didn't have one and now I have custom light weight cases.. :sad:

Those Banshee chain guides work pretty damn good, I wouldnt' remove it. Aftermarket 250r swingarms use the same Banshee chain guide. Its a good design.

I have an aftermarket skid plate with a much better chain guard. That tells me its necessary to have it. Mine also protects the sprocket from rock damage.

i'm not sure....what possibly could a "chain guide" do? hmmm...could it possibly guide the chain?!! "is it necessary?" only if you want a little extra insurace to keep your chain on your sprocket and out of your cases. let me know if you need that explained since "chain guide" was so hard to figure out.

I wont run a swinger with out one.. I found that the chain jumps around ALOT more the longer the swinger is. I dont need a chain to wreck my $$$ motor/cases.

My first shee didnt have one. I like to ride and dont always have money to fix stuff like it should be fixed. I ended up running one without it. Out of necessity no preference. I wouldnt recommend it. It could be fine for 5 years, or you can trash your case in 5 minutes. I only rolled the dice because im a broke hoe.
