mdhc500 Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 I ran the search in repair/mods and did not really turn anything up... Does anyone have a good procedure on installing a degree key? I have a +4 key I want to install... Sorry for such a newb question, but hey... I'm a newb... Quote
dajogejr Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 Yes... Throw it out...or sell it. get a timing plate. Easier, adjustable, etc. Quote
Snopczynski Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 Yes...Throw it out...or sell it. get a timing plate. Easier, adjustable, etc. And the timing plate wont break and leave you stranded. Quote
dajogejr Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 And the timing plate wont break and leave you stranded. Snop... Apparently he doesn't want experience or credible advice...he'd rather just go the free route, and find out NOTHING is free. So...here's my advice. get the correct tool that threads into the inside of the flywheel, don't use a 3 jaw puller, it will bend the flywheel. Pullers are 10 bucks....make sure you clean the threads on the flywheel, they will be rusty and dirty. Was that too much to weed through?? Quote
locogato11283 Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 degree keys are shit. like these other monkeys said, go with the timing plate.. Quote
KaosBanshee44 Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 If you go with a timing plate please don't get ricky stator, there just as bad as a timing key Quote
spurdy Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 Flywheel puller $10 on ebay. Cast timing plate on ebay. Done and solid. No being stranded because of a broken key. Just my $0.02. SP Quote
mdhc500 Posted July 30, 2008 Author Report Posted July 30, 2008 Isnt the STOCK setup that of a KEY??? Quote
dajogejr Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 Isnt the STOCK setup that of a KEY??? Yes,...but it is the same uniform thickness top to bottom. All the degree key does is offset that, giving it an easier shear point. Quote
KaosBanshee44 Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 Spend just a little bit more money and get a nice durable timing plate. Quote
No Limit Powersports Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 The keys are crap, to hard to install, and shear real easy and no adjustablility. The cast plates are fine the billet plates are real nice not really any stress on the plate itself so unless your prying it on and off you shouldnt break it which you shouldnt be doing any way . shanYE west Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 I'll say what everyone else is saying.. Dont waste your money on the key and get a cheap casted plate. You'll be much happier in the long run.. Quote
fastbanshee Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 I have had my degree key in since 2001 and have had no problems with it. I'm getting ready to install HID lights on my bike when I do I think I'm gonna pull it out and put the stock one back in. And go with the timing plate. Quote
mdhc500 Posted July 30, 2008 Author Report Posted July 30, 2008 The keys are crap, to hard to install Ok... Hard to install??? I have had the flywheel off my stock motor, and putting a key in that little groove and re-isntalling the flywheel is not hard by any means... Quote
mdhc500 Posted July 30, 2008 Author Report Posted July 30, 2008 Yes,...but it is the same uniform thickness top to bottom. All the degree key does is offset that, giving it an easier shear point. This wont happen... My key has been specially fabricated from titanium alloy... Quote
