newbie mistakes

So let me start by saying my parents never let me have a quad growing up which is probably why I am so addicted now. I bought a honda 250x and within a week was ready for something faster. My thought was something like "Everybody wants to build a Banshee Killer, why not just get a Banshee?" Shortly after I picked up two basket cases off ebay for $1500 and began putting them back together. With a lot of help from this site I got them both put back together and running well.

Some blunders since:

1. After assembling Banshee #2 I accidently left the hose clamp a little loose on the coolant line from the head. It popped off after a big step up jump and burned the heck out of my leg while my friends were watching! Coolant is surprisingly not cool.

2. Banshee #1 didn't have nerf bars. After taking a jump at a bad angle my foot slipped off the peg and I was pulled off and run over by my own bike. The rear whell grabbed my boot and pulled my off and under. It was in really soft sand so I didn't get hurt but it left an impression of most of my body in the ground. Again friends laughed! Banshee #1 now has nerf bars and a good hose clamp.

3. Banshee #2 had a twist throttle from the previos owner. I had never ridden anything with a twist throttle up until this point. I was riding around slow just trying to get a feel for it and decided to go back to my garage. The rear brake was not hooked up yet so I had to use the front to slow down. I made what I'm guessing is a common mistake and rolled the throttle back as I pulled the brake lever. The bike took off and I was just able to steer enough to miss the garage wall. I did however blast through my landscaping, hit a huge shrub and almost flip off when it stopped. I remember thinking I was going to die when it hit the shrub it's really more of a tree. The front was pushed down and the back wheels came up in the air. I wound up trapped between the Banshee, shrub, and garage wall. At least the Banshee wasn't damaged but my wife wasn't very happy the next morning when she saw what happened. Banshee #2 now has a thumb throttle, rear brakes, and nerf bars!

That is really funny. Hey man atleast you leanred what you like and what you need on the bike. Sometimes it takes shit like this to realize those needs.

I know many a guys around here that need a floorboard/heelguard or nerfs because they have their feet come off all the time. Me on the other hand, I don't have that problem. Not even on the my 250r or quadracer.
