Hey all, I was out riding some trails on Sat when my motor locked up. I was changing from 2nd to 3rd with not much revs and the back wheels just lockewd and she died. The kick starter wont move and i thought i heard a noise from the tranny before it happened. Kinda like grinding or something rattling. I have taken the pipes off and the left one had loads of bits of piston in it.

I guess what i am askin is what all do I have to do to get her fixed back up and going? I have a clymers and am hoping I can have a go at fixing this myself. Is it difficult? I dont want to give the loacl guys any more work as the really fucked myover the last time.

Im a bit scared about splitting cases and messing with gears.

Finally is there any mods i should be doing to give me more power while i have her stripped down?

Thanks and sorry for the long post! I'll be depending on this site to get me thru this! Cheers

Oh my only mods are dmc alien pipes, k & N filter with air box modified and 240mains. I have been searching the forums and the same thing keeps coming up....."find the cause then fix the problem" so any help will be great if you's can point me in the direction of my problem. Thanks again

I let a "buddy" of mine ride mine last April.

Got it back in the same condition (wheels locked, piston in pipes)

The only diff..... there was coolant leaking all over. It broke both case halves.

On teardown I found that the cylinder sleeve was melted away, the rod snapped at

the wrist pin end, and what was left of the wrist pin was mostly melted.

Basically, you have to teardown to know what you're gonna need.

Teardown and rebuild will be alot easier if you have access to an air compressor and

impact wrench. Some things on the clutch side are really tough without it.

The possibilities of adding power are only limited to how fat your wallet is !!!

You should explain how you like to ride, and someone here will tell you how to set it up.

Cheers mate. So am i wise trying a rebuild myself or is it too technical? I have read that the top end is not too bad so its the bottom that really causes me some concern.

I basically ride around fields with my mates. Nothing too serious but if i can increase my power while it is stripped then id probably do it!

Any info is invaluable. Thanks

Any one got any advice? Ive been looking through clymers and the bottom end looks real complicated. Is this the case?

Any ideas what could have caused it? Please help!

Somebody!!! Anybody!!!!

It looks a little overwhelming in the clymers, but it really is pretty easy to split the cases. I would start with taking the top end apart...may be lucky and just have something in the top end damaged. I found that Jared's post of Splitting the Cases helped me out a lot!!!

No the bottom is not too bad. If you have the right tools it will be easier.

You could remove your airbox and run K&N pods, and maybe some bigger carbs (PWKs).

But the biggest gain would come from some porting to the cylinders.

Why the hell arent you drunk anyway ? >>>>LOL :yelrotflmao:

Actually after reading this, yea you most likely do have engine damage, although I would still check the clutch first. But you most likely need to rebuild

its pretty easy to rebuild a banshee engine. the top end is easy. just take pictures of everything as you dissasemble it so when you forget where something goes, you can look back. once you have the top end, flywheel and stator, and clutch side components, there is nothing left. and getting it back together is as simple as laying everything and and yamabonding the cases together.

you will need a golf ball(to drop in the cylinder then put head back on and it locks the motor), a flywheel puller, two steel and 3 fiber plates(to drill 3 holes in and put bolts and nutsin(to lock clutch). and some tools. especially a steel bar for torque on the big nuts.

its not hard, any questions once you get it apart, just let any of us know.

Those are some really good ideas.

But, if you have access to an air compressor and an impact wrench, it'll be alot easier.

You will also need a torque wrench for re-assembly.

if it locked up and there are peices of piston in the exhaust, i doubt that anything is wrong in the tranny. may have broke clutch plates from it locking up, but my guess is that a peice of that piston got in the crankcase and jammed it up.

and iroost i like your idea for the clutch holding tool, bolting the plates together. good stuff

Yeah from reading other posts i think there is some crap down in my tranny and will need cleaned out. Also thinking about a port job while i have the engine stripped down.

Not really sure what you's mean about the plates to hold the clutch but hopefully all will come clear when i get stuck in.

Cheers for the tips guys. Im gona take into it this weekend hopefully. il probably be in touch if i get stuck. Thanks again

something to think about too....with the dmc pipes and k&n filter....240 jets sound a bit lean to me....i had t5's and a k&n and was running 280's in my bike......that may be why it came apart.....
