try swapping the plug wires from left to right and see if the problem switches sides. if not then it's not your coil/wires/caps... swap your plugs and if not then it's not the plugs. you said that you tried new carbs and reed's, did you make sure and sync the carbs when you swapped? did you verify that the slide on your right side carb was infact raising when you pushed the throttle? your right side cable could have came undone or broke where the two go into one. do a leakdown test. make sure your gas cap vent tube isn't kinked.

Something dumb to check, but didnt see it mentioned.

Is the choke tube between the 2 carbs not connected? or cracked maybe?

I just ran into EXACTLY the same problem this weekend on my brothers bike. He installed a idle kit and removed tors caps. When he was putting everything back together he put the slides in the wrong carbs. It was doing exactly what yours was doing. Intermitent fire and running cold and weak on one cylinder. Might want to check that out. Switch the carb caps and make sure the cut-away on the slides face back. I found the problem after checking everything else out like you did.. turned out to be a simple fix..

fouldout is right also, It could be a number of things on these bikes. You just have to get to know your bike, and how to deal with the minor things.

hang in there, most things are usually an easy fix

It looks like you've checked just about everything. Did you use a new head gasket after the rebuild? Could the head be warped? I've seen that problem with coolant leaking into one cylinder (as you mentioned). Water will be beaded up on the the spark plug in the affected cylinder. It doesn't take much water at all to stop the combustion. I doubt it is a crank seal b/c the right side would suck in tranny oil and should be noticeable on the spark plug, though I have no personal experience with any crank seal leak at all; only what I have read on this site.

either the slides are in backwards, the carbs are not synced, or you might be missing the washer that goes under the main jet that holds the nozzle secure, this would allow the nozzle to be sucked into the carb body. most likely its the slides or sync or both.

Check the right pipe and make sure it,s not plugged. Shop rag, mouse, you would be suprised at some of the things that have been found in pipes.

Sounds like your throttle cable might be failing you. When they fray, they can cause carb sync problems. If you are damn sure your carbs are dead on, time to do a leak down. The crank seal is not the only place it can pull air. If you are getting a nasty backfire on the cylnder, that would indicated a lean pop condition and possibly an air leak.

Guys, all great replies. For those of you that said that I may have had the carb slides in backwards, you win. What an idiot!!! The thing barks like a dog now.

Thanks for the help.
